Tuning - who's done it on their own?

Looking into a tune for my 14 Supercharged trail. It desperately needs a retune due to bigger tires, weight, gearing, etc. YotaTune has one for my setup for $950(Canada) but I'm wondering if it's worth it to go down the path of my own tuning, using HP Tuners or similar(Winols, Kess?). Has anyone done this? I know messing with a tune can be very risky, I used to be in the B5 C5 Audi tuning game but Me7 is way different from Toyota ECUs, from what I understand.

I was nervous enough just flashing my ECU with someone's tried and tested tune, I'm very technical but definitely wouldn't try messing with my ECU myself, leave it to the professionals.

Very true, best to have someone flash it based on a tried and true base tune, then go drive it, and adjust if necessary. Thanks for the feedback.

shouldnt be too difficult to tune as long as its nothing too extreme. I played with tunes on harleys for a few years and its just finding one you like. Would recommended checking out kdmax tunes , could use that as a starting point and adjust from there. Not sure if there is a tune for supercharger though

With bigger tires and gearing I think a lot of it is in the TCU for shifting points, that's the thing I'm concerned about. The engine could probably be tweaked a bit, a bit more boost would be nice ;)

TCU tuning is not available on any years <2020 so youre out of luck there. From experience tuning my G35 myself using uprev and greddy emanage and also helping to do alpha/beta testing on a magnuson 4runner tune I can tell you its worth it to pay the $ if you can get a good canned tune.

Unless you are familiar with it and either have access to a dyno or are good at logging changes it becomes a dangerous game especially with boost. BTW you will not get additional boost because that is belt/gear driven and the tune can only optimize timing and fuel for the set amount of boost the magnuson gives. I do not know of any magnuson pulley upgrades for this platform either. URD already told me they do not have any and don't plan to do any.

I also installed an innovate wideband to help with getting the tune optimized so you will be out that cost+cost of VFTuner w/ license+time and possibly dyno time to do it properly yourself anyway.

For my audi I just flashed using an Integrated Engineering tune.

Good info, thank you. Like with my Audis, I will leave it up to the tuner experts. All my B5s and C5s were dyno tuned to the cars condition and upgrades. There are so many variables and if you mess something up the car go boom boom, game over, especially running 18-24lbs of boost. With the Toyota on a mag supercharger, it seems to be the same. I don't want to screw it up so I'll stick with the experts.

Thanks again

Uprev at the time was an amazing tool, and I still consider at an amazing tool. To dial things in properly you will definitely need a wideband and optimally a dyno and maybe even build knock headphones.

VAG cars are far more forgiving, having done A LOT with VR6 turbos and superchargers.

Especially being supercharged now, I would get Yota Werx flash bundle and get on a dyno if you are serious and have him dial it in for you.
