I'm using Kuat dirtbag fork mounts directly to the LFD crossbars for a single bike and an ATOC Tandem Topper tandem rack directly to the crossbars for our fat bike tandem. The crossbars are very secure, but I use bolts with nuts and fender washers instead of the T-nuts. Rear wheels just get strapped down.

I am finally going to do it! Going to purchase the 7/8 side rails with some additional cross bars to add to the 4 I have already. Also going to purchase the skid plate set!

I did have questions for the current owners of a 7/8 rack and have a sunroof.

I do not really care about seeing the wind fairing out of my sunroof as I dont really ever look out of it. However, I do open it w/the rear window for nice solid airflow in the truck. My question for this is, can you hear the wind noise when the sunroof is open? I know the wind fairing killed all wind noise for me now but that is with the stock rails and it sits behind the sunroof. Does that change by moving it forward to the middle of the sunroof?

Second question, how many crossbars are you running with your 7/8 rack? I plan on having my traction boards, Plano case 52", high lift jack, and then hopefully in the future some solar. Will 5 be enough or should I go to 6?

Appreciate the help and suggestions! Thx!

I just installed my 7/8 LFD roof rack last week. So far I haven't heard any additional wind noise with the sunroof open (was going about 50-60 mph). I'm not sure what version of the crossbars/railings you got. I bought their complete 7/8 roof rack set in powercoated steel.. maybe the heavier metal makes it less noisy. My 7/8 came with a special wind fairing that I read somewhere only comes when you buy the 7/8 kit? It is like the crossbar and wind fairing are one piece rather than two separate pieces like when you do it separately. I believe my 7/8 came with 8 crossbars and then the wind fairing built into the 9th crossbar.

Quick question with anyone with the powdercoated steel crossbars/roof rack, how is your powdercoat holding up? I'm so paranoid about rust. I bought the 7/8 ruggedized powdercoat steel roof rack kit and installed it last week. I kind of wish I bought the aluminum one for a little bit more to ensure my rack won't rust.. but at the same time I eventually want a RTT and I read the steel is a little bit more sturdy.

Just paranoid about my LFD rack rusting in a few years if the powdercoat doesn't hold up well..

I have the steel crossbars and wind fairing currently so sounds like my experience will be the same as yours with no added wind noise!

I asked LFD about that crossbar/wind fairing as I did not see it on their site to purchase, hope it comes with one.

Would you mind posting a pic with 9 crossbars? That seems like a lot!

Thx for the reply!

I’ve attached a photo (hope I did it right). I don’t have a pic of them on my car right now but I laid them out before I installed them (laid out the railing on the wrong side, oops). You can see the crossbar with the wind fairing built together too.

I really appreciate you posting both pics! Makes me want to get mine even more

Have you measured how far apart your crossbars are from each other?

That looks great.

...just so everyone knows: You don't necessarily need so many crossbars. It looks really good, but these things are super strong. I've carried lumber on just a set of 2 several times.

I'm at about 19 (almost 20) months of tossing a tent (in a bag) up there, table, mounting a number of different lights (in different configurations), carrying furniture, and probably most damaging, I've hit TONS of low hanging branches... The powdercoat on my LFD rear bumper after about 6 months is also in amazing shape...

Horrible photo that doesn't really show any detail on powdercoat, but is of my LFD rack from last month while doing the Trans NH Expedition route.... It does show how it's currently set up (with rings to tie down the tent/table) and some of the lighting added

How do you like that tent? I'm interested in a Gazelle!

Love it, it's our second one (sold a regular T4 that was a few years old, we bought it used when the new Overland Edition came out for the waterproof bag and foot print). Everything from strong winds, heavy rain, 20 degree to 95+ degree temps, these things are stout and set up quickly. My only complaint is that set up/tear down exposes the all mesh top to the elements, even if only for a brief moment
