water leaking in

Had water leaking in 2 different times on my 2013 4 Runner and on both side of the car..and it was a lot of water. Sunroof drains were fine. Both times during heavy rain and parked like lots of other folks on here. The last time when I moved my car and went uphill I could hear a ton of water behind the dash sloshing around and then it pored down over my feet. Way more water than a small leak would have caused in the windshield. What I think I figured out was that there was a lot of leaf debris in the windshield drain inside the engine(plastic trays with drains) and in the areas where the pillars drain on the corners of the hood. I think that the areas could not handle the amount of water because of the debris and backed up somehow into the car behind the dash. I cleared out the leaves and other debris and then ran a hose for a long time down from sunroof and got no leaking. Still not able to simulate a heavy rain, but hoping that was the issue. Seems a ton of folks with 4Runners and Tacos have this issue. Maybe the need to put larger drains in these areas so it doesn't get backed up and then flood.

Hi jpeak,

That makes a lot of sense! I also believe that the HVAC outdoor air intake is up there beneath those leaf/debris screens, so if they back-up I'm sure that water would find it's way into the dash area! 'Best'

Check your a/c drain hose. The condensation that drips from the drain hose can back up into the evaporator core if the drain tube gets clogged and cause water leakage from behind the dash and sometimes drip onto your legs/feet when making turns.
