Back up camera issue

So i am having an intermittent issue with the back up camera. This is the second time its done it in the week. I put the truck into reverse and the screen turn black but once it goes to drive or park it goes right back to the radio/nav. I did look at other post about the reverse switch on the side of the transmission but today it sounded quieter and i thought i heard a bit of a low pop every so often. Is there anything in the system that the back up camera could short out or has anyone else had this issue. 2014 trail

Had this happen to me after water got inside the camera during a wash. This sounds very similar to me. The reverse switch would not be the source of the problem if the dash is switching to the camera view (even though it is a black screen) when in reverse. See my thread on what I did about it here: GUIDE: How to use an aftermarket rear view camera with the stock head unit

I was wondering if maybe that could have been it. The thing that was throwing me was when its not working the volume of the head unit is way less. Turning the volume to 56 sounds like 20.
Thanks i will check that out.

So after unplugging the back camera i am still having a big issue. The sound is at half even at 60 and at 50 you can not yell just talk over it and hear it super distort. i am starting to worry if maybe the camera didn't crap out and take the head unit with it. But the head unit still plays music and navigates but just the sounds funky. and im pretty sure i am hearing a small pop or low frequency popping every so often.

Does the camera module look like it has water in it?

It takes very little water to short it out. Mine did not have any visible water in it, but when I took it apart there was a small amount of rust on some metal inside.

I have been experiencing the same exact issue with the backup camera. Sometimes it won't just be black but will just be black and white, or fade out slowly once I engage it.

I was thinking it was water and haven't gotten a chance to take a look.

I agree with the other poster though that your volume issue is probably not associated with the camera.

When my backup camera went out it would flicker, turn to black and white, or just not show up altogether. I know for a fact it was the camera (well besides having it replaced) because I have inadvertently hit the stupid thing with a high-pressure wash a few times. Even says in the manual to avoid this.

Has you or anyone done any aftermarket work to the truck or did you buy it new?

Backup camera wiring loose in tailgate

I've been experiencing the same issue of the backup camera intermittently going to only black screen about once every 30 startups when in reverse but otherwise the nav/screen operated normally in all other gears (this is the key and only symptom, I had no other issues.) I had the dealership check it out and of course couldn't replicate the issue but foudn there's a TSB software update for the nav unit with this symptom, luckily I was still under warranty.

After they updated it I read up on the TSB and it didn't seem as if that would have been the only symptom of the software glitch. As expected that didn't fix it and it came back a month afterwards. However this time I wasn't in a rush to work and had my wife sit inside the car with it in reverse and parking brake on. I wiggled the sensor/switching wiring on the transmission (watch that hot exhaust) and smacked the gear selector and nav unit a few times for the hell of it. An older post on this mentioned the tailgate wiring breaking so I opened the tailgate and sure enough as soon as it unlatched and I lifted it the wife said the screen was working. Shut the tailgate again, screen goes black; open it up and screen back on. Had wife record everything happening on her cellphone for good measure.

Took it back to dealership and long story a little shorter they said one of the wiring pins in the harness had a loose connection and fixed it, sounds like its right at that rubber boot protecting the wiring going into the tailgate when it's open similar to that older post someone else mentioned. We'll see how it pans out going forward but it sounded more promising than the software update, though it sounds like a few of the users here might have better luck with that update from the sound of it. 2016 Trail as well with the Entune premium nav (not the JBL).

Did this fix your issues? From what I've read I've got similar connection issues (sometimes black, sometimes dark blue with waves or lines on screen, but intermittent and usually works like normal). I haven't taken a look at my connection yet, but people don't come back to report afterward what the result was.
