I was kind of shocked by the price. I also didn't realize that it is the top selling Toyota model with over 400,000 per year. 4Runner isn't even in the top 5. The Rav4 is actually the 4th best selling vehicle of 2017.

That V6 Rav did 0-60 in around 6.3 seconds. Pretty quick, as you say.

But then I do prefer RWD with good tires over AWD. Only need 4wd to get up some occasional driveway or in actual off-roading.
The current iteration of 4matic+ is simply an open center diff and ABS traction control. It's nearly identical to the Subaru base model. Torsen center diff is a nice step up from that system for going off the pavement. On the highway the open center diff in 4Matic probably has less of its own input during turns.

They always had different versions without a clutch pack in center. In any case, for snowy roads driving modern simpler systems are lighter, handle better, less sensitive to uneven tread wear (Subaru could be cooked with 2/32 difference when people forget to religiously rotate front to back tires) and perfectly adequate for light off-roading - unlike the abomination of CVT.

Either that or a proper 4wd for me please.

My wife’s 2004 Forester XT turbo has been a great little car all these years.
It’s pretty small but it gets the same gas mileage as my 4R, 18-20 mpg. Even when driving it conservatively.
It’s fun though, when you hit the pedal it takes off like a rocket!

That's pretty pitiful mileage. One of the things that's holding me back on the 4Runner purchase is the apparent abysmal mileage. I remember I was pretty shocked at how poor my 2003 Tacoma mileage was after purchasing it new. The range was awful on trips.

I'm trying to talk myself into something like a Rav4 which is a completely new concept, mostly because the mileage is so good which equates to cheaper ownership. It's all a trade-off. I like the 4Runner better, but I don't think we've seen the last of oil price spikes/shocks, and I think it's good to buy a fuel sipper when fuel prices are still low.
