Headlight Questions?

I own two different SR5 4Runners and I want to replace my 2017 4Runner headlights to LED, however I dont know the best ones to install on it that wont cause the module issues/flickering? All advice is welcome.

Check out the thread in my sig. Long story short, LEDs in both the highbeam and low beam positions have issues.

Agree with previous posters that the flickering issue is just with high beam LEDs when DRLs are on.

However, I had success with Xenon Depot’s new driver. No flickering with DRLs on and they aren’t at full brightness like some others do. It’s the correct brightness during the day and very bright like they should be with high beams activated.

This is the kit I got with the extra ($59) DRL LED driver:
9005 LED Headlight Kit | 9005 LED high beam Upgrade

For low beams, you can get any LED bulb really. I got the Katanas off Amazon and they were relatively inexpensive and work well.

So the DRL is needed with Toyota 4Runners? Has anyone had both LED and DRL drives for high and low? Im asking because we rarely use high beams in FL and if I do need a high beam I use the light bar.

Needed? In the US they aren’t mandatory to run.

I’m not sure what you’re asking, but I have both high and low beam LED. Both have “drivers” but the high beam I linked earlier from xenon depot works specifically to our high beam lights to allow running at a lower Lumen output while in DRL mode.

You could run a regular high beam LED without the special driver and it’ll work just fine except if you turn on your DRLs. Then it’ll either flicker or be too bright with DRLs on. The high beams will work normally.

As for using a light bar on public roads, there are a few laws that can get you in law enforcement attention if you have them on like whether they are DOT approved, will blind oncoming traffic, or will exceed the number of running lights you have on (varies by state).

Sorry for the confusion. My question is do you need the DRL for both high and low beams or just high? Ive been looking at getting the xenon light kit for my 17 T4R but I am not wanting to buy more than what is needed, like do I need two DRL for the LEDS or just the one for High? Again Im new to this whole LED light thing. As to the bar light its only used in areas where I would normally have to use my High Beams. Such as the 5 miles it takes to get from the main street to my house.

DRL is your Daytime Running Light. In stock form, it’s the lights that are on during the day (and you don’t have “DRL off” nor your parking brake engaged when you first start up). If you look while they’re on, it’s actually the high beams that are on but operating much dimmer. This is because the electrical system is sending a pulsing power signal to the high beam lights.

The low beams have nothing to do with this, so you go with any LED upgrade and it’s not affected.

However, since the high beam lights are used for both high beam and DRL lighting, and they are sent two different power signals, a LED bulb without the proper driver will not operate correctly when it is sent the pulsing power signal (DRL active).

Thanks, for the break down of that I wasnt thinking about DRL being the day time running lights I was thinking it was the CANBUS that was needed to run these LED lights. What Katana lights did you get.

the same happened to me, with Katana kit, I returned and I bought Lasfit LA Plus, very good quality and much brighter than Katana, easy installation and fit perfect. For the DRL / High beam got the xenon depot w DRL module, works great.

check out Morimoto fog lights Oval Toyota LED Fog Lights | Morimoto XB Fog Lights

i dont have experience with these fogs, but majority of my friends bought them and liked it. Only product i have from Morimoto are the H11 Elite HID and 9005 2stroke 2.0 LED; if you can hold off on purchasing fog lights, save the money and just buy rigid industries or baja design.

How did everyone deal with the dust cap? Did you cut a hole out for the wire to come out, did you try to cram everything in, or did you just leave it off?

For those with the Katanas did you have to adjust the position of the LEDs before installing them? I think I have them at 9/3 but can't tell. Is there a way to look through the housing and tell?

i used a spade drill bit for the dust cap. If you leave the dust cap off, you'll run into problems with moisture and dirt getting inside of your housing.
