I just swapped over the little metal cartidge piece in the middle. You just bend the little metal prongs to be able to spin the inner piece and remove, with spring. Then swap over and bend back. Super easy and oil changes have been 10x easier since.
Very important little procedure is do as @pDubs did and swap over the little metal cartridge piece in the middle. The aluminum one comes with a shorter piece. Easy swap.
I did this on mine a while back!

Do you have a link for that specific deep tool? I just received mine off of Amazon and it does not have the notches you reference.

I believe this is the one. I bought couple on amazon so not 100% sure.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It is metal too not plastic.

*edit
I'm 99% sure this is the one I got for the highlander the other one says Tundra which I bought it for.

Don't fool with this one, spend the $25 on the Motivx filter tool. Also available on Amazon.

I have a Motivx one also for when I had my Tundra and they are the same. Both are metal.

My Motvix one actually stripped a little where you stick your ratchet.

Great info in an old thread. I’m trying to work through my stuck oil filter housing right now. Pretty much stranded at the moment with the tools I have. I love Toyota but this filter is a pain.

(original conversation was: "oh, we'll get you one for tomorrow, rush delivery"... tomorrow came, I called, and it was as if that conversation never happened. It wasn't even ordered) So I called Napa and I got a doorman metal one which I intended to be for a limited use until I got a toyota replacement. They had one in a town 2 hours away, and they had it delivered within 4 hours.

Well, once it was installed, I decided i didn't need to replace it. I've done 3 oil changes since then, and it goes on and off buttery smooth. So I'm using the doorman replacement, and I have no issues with it.

I did file some burrs off of the threads when I received it. It sure didn't look pretty.

But the threads themselves do not see any pressure. The entire housing is designed to properly place the O ring, and there is not a lot of torque required to do so properly.

Toyota makes an aluminium filter housing that fits. I had intended to get it, but I probably won't now. There's some threads on this forum about the proper metal oil filter housing from Toyota.

TLDR: I use the doorman parts-store replacement. I wouldn't recommend it based on the look of the casting, but it's been working fine for me. At a fraction of the price of the OEM composite housing.

Thanks for this. Like most people, I don’t really have time or options when my truck is sitting around. I found the Dorman part locally and will try it out. Toyota wants (brace yourself) $134 for the stock plastic filter housing. It comes WITH the filter element, though. Oil filter cap stuck The parts guy at Toyota and I had a good laugh. He also recommended changing that inner piece and said he’s seen issues where it hasn’t been done. So that was cool.

Anyways, the Dorman part number is:
917-016

I am on duty today so this will have to wait until tomorrow.

That sucks. I started doing my own at 5k intervals at 140,000 miles. When I did, I discovered that none of the zerks on the slips or the spiders had ever been greased, they still had factory black paint on them and I had to pick it off to get the grease gun on!

I'm still using the plastic housing and using correct torque values with a cheap $10 filter wrench from NAPA, pennzoil brand i think. The plastic housing is fine if you do it correctly. the metal ones and the valve look nice if you've got the cash to upgrade, but I'm fine with the stock. Just putting it out there.

I’ve been doing my own since owning my truck (56,000 miles when purchased, now 103,000). I have absolutely no idea why my filter housing is seemingly seized on there. I know I torqued to value. The only thing I can think of is maybe the plastic swelled over time. I have no idea but there’s no logical explanation since I’m the only one who wrenched on it.

Amazon has the Toyota aluminum oil filter cap for $30. It was $20 a couple weeks when I bought it.

It was a bit tricky for me to change the tall stack/tube to the aluminum cap.

When installing, I put some anti seize on the aluminum threads.

Genuine Toyota 15620-31060 Oil Filter Cap Assembly
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And I like this tool from ebay. Not for use with impact wrenches.
Oil-filter wrench Toyota/Lexus/Scion - 09228-06501 | eBay

It doesn't slip.

Mine was dealer serviced until I did first oil change. Only three over tightened skid plate bolts that broke and needed to be extracted. One on the radiator support and two in the skid plate where the plastic radiator cover attaches.

Great links!

For those who can’t wait for Amazon, I found the Dorman filter housing listed above at Napa but Advances Autoparts had it too in a neighboring town. Napa also had an aluminum tool like picture above for around $32. I’ll report back on all these items tomorrow when I finish the job. It’s not Toyota brand, which I prefer, but may work just fine if you’re in a pinch.

So I finished my seized stock oil filter housing job today. The oil filter cap I bought from NAPA worked like a charm but man was the stock plastic cap on there. It’s bizarre since I’m the one who wrenched it last time, leading me to believe the plastic may have swelled. I have explanation beyond that.

I ended using the Dorman housing I listed a few posts back. I also swapped the inner element as suggested here and by the Toyota tech I spoke with. Just pull the center tabs up so it will rotate. Then push down and turn counterclockwise. Reverse for installation in the Dorman housing and push the tabs back down to prevent rotation.

I know the Dorman isn’t a Toyota piece, but the quality appears acceptable and I have no qualms about giving it a go. I could have tried the stock housing again but I wasn’t super confident doing so after it stuck. Either way, the NAPA tool worked perfectly and was in stock.
