Ford is king of trucks and the last Gen expedition and explorers are comfortable and look good but explorers had a co2 leak inside the cab issue and the reliability, longevity is an issue. It will be a good fit for those that consider 4runner are too utilitarian and not enough gizmos. . I grew up with American cars so I have a soft spot for them in my heart and hope someday they give the Japanese, Korean, Europeon and other auto makers a run for their money when it comes to suv's.

It's ugly AF....

And I agree it's more of a competitor for Highlander and Pilot

Bronco with 3.5L ecoboost would be awfully tempting...

Really the Mitsubishi pajero and Toyota's fortuner are the closest competitors overseas. If Mitsubishi brought it here then Toyota might take a 6th gen seriously

Only if Ford adds port injectors to supplement the direct injectors.

Also Santa Fe, Atlas, Ascent, XC90, Pathfinder, CX9, Durango, Grand Cherokee, and what else everyone buys nowadays.

I would pick Santa Fe, Pilot, or XC90 out of that depending on price point.

Only upcoming competition to 4Runner will be Bronco.

But they're turbo'ed small engines, so at what RPM are you really seeing those numbers? I'm willing to bet most people will never break 3500rpm on an engine. If they're over 60 and living in Florida it's 2000rpm!

Looks like a mall running crossover. Not a chance. More of a direct competitor of the Highlander.

I'd think you would be surprised. Modern turbo motors are nothing like turbo motors of the past. When not chasing absolute peak numbers you can see peak torque number well below 3000rpm. I used to really be into VW's back in my teen years. When VW came out with their 1.8T motor, peak torque hit at 2250 rpm and stayed flat till 5000rpm.

300hp out of a 4cyl is indeed impressive! My first car was a '96 Explorer which had a 5.0L V8 and if I remember correctly it only put out 210hp.

New Explorer looks exactly like my neighbors new Range Rover Velar. Exactly.

And let’s not flatter ourselves....... I don’t think any manufacturer is “competing” with the 4Runner which is barely on anyone’s radar.

Its a cool upgrade to the Explorer. Its a rear drive competitor to the Highlander.

I had a 14 explorer and even with rear drive and like 1/2 inch more ground clearance, they have made it more off road worthy incrementally, but no way that is competitive with all aspects of the 4runner.

With this upgrade, the only thing the explorer has on the 4runner is rear cargo space.

Not to mention...as someone already did...the rear cabin exhaust leak was a deal breaker for me. I'll never go back. Huge design flaw akin to the Chevy Shake (google it).
On top of it all the Chicago plant's QC is abysmal compared to other Ford plants.

Thanks for posting that. That is literally an insane difference in reliability.
