Ever own a Mitsubishi? I did... once. They tried to sell the montero for a while. They never really competed in a meaningful way. Lower quality. Less performance. Similar price. Never really had a chance.

They are also now a unibody IFS/IRS, so I'd still put them pretty squarely in Highlander/Explorer/JeepCG category. Once they go soft they rarely come back.

They should. They're essentially the same vehicle. LR still builds essentially Ford platforms. Some still have ecoboost engines.

I think they take the ford parts - then randomly damage electronic parts to make sure it'll break down more often. That's how they turn it into a Land Rover.

No solid axle, no body on frame, lower to the ground. How is this even remotely close to a 4Runner? It's ugly, ford is unreliable in general. The Exploder and 4Runner are in 2 completely different classes. The 4R is one of the last true SUV's out there while the Explorer is a large crossover.

Good news, they already have as of 2018.

I would pick Santa Fe, Pilot, or XC90 out of that depending on price point.

Only upcoming competition to 4Runner will be Bronco.
There was a time that I was seriously considering replacing the 4runner with a plug-in XC60, so long as it had the air suspension. Just a little too pricey to drive a more complicated vehicle on the beach, especially if I'm keeping it for a long time.

I'm guessing you haven't driven a modern turbocharged 4 cyl. Most modern turbocharged motors favor lower RPM torque over high RPM power. My wife's '13 Mini Cooper S has gobs of torque at low RPM's, and it doesn't even have a fancy variable vane turbocharger. In fact from 0-40 mph, it's quicker than my M3, but it kind of falls on its face above 5000 rpm.

I've enjoyed seeing all the responses to the thread. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't baiting this group with the original title.

I agree on many counts
  • The Explorer isn't body on frame
  • The clearance / departure angles aren't as good as 4Runner
  • Ford does have reliability issues (One of the reasons I chose my 4Runner over a Jeep was the 48% better reliability).
  • Etc...

The biggest risk Explorer poses to 4Runner is for consumers who want a primarily on-road vehicle with lots of creature comforts and light off road capability. The Limited trim plays to this consumer to some extent (although it's capable off road). With Explorer's ability to tow at a competitive weight now and more bells and whistles it may sway some buyers.

My hope is with the 4RUNNER 6th Gen the vehicle keeps it's off road credibility while putting enough comfort and technology into the vehicle to maintain appeal to the masses.

The 2nd and 3rd Monteros are very reliable and excellent off-road, maybe even better than a 4Runner of the era stock vs. stock. The frame is not a typical unibody, it’s very stout and designed for hard off-road. They will never have the flex of a 4Runner but they have an advanced traction system that does great when a tire is off the ground. They have a great reputation overseas and are more in line with a land cruiser than a Highlander.

I check my speed every time I see an exploder on the road.
They all look like cop cars.

The back window does not go down. No competition there. End of story.
