I don't think the entire dash has to come off. I took apart the interior on my 2016 4Runner TE, including the passenger air bag. It was a but of a pain, but definitely doable. I almost want to hand them the one I have and pick up the new one and do it myself, but you know how stuff like these recalls go.

But the drivers side airbag is not affected? Never hear anything about it. Same airbag make right, just diff size and shape. I drive solo 95% of the time. I have a 2012 SR5 and have heard zippp from my dealer or Toyota regarding a change out.

Air bag recall
I got a notice two days ago to schedule an appointment for my 2015 Trail Edition. These latest posts are helpful. I will be taking photos of the dash and console in case they mess it up. The last time I took it to the dealer was for the "Free Oil Change". They overtightened the skid plate bolts and I had to cut the plate off later so I could do the lift install. I've been doing all my own maintenance ever since then.
Yes, so what about the driver's side airbag?

The driver side airbag is a completely different design... donut vs a tube-style inflator... and does not have the same design flaw. Also, the dealer will not contact you but you will get a mailing from Toyota directly notifying your recall is activated. Or you can check Lookup Safety Recalls & Service Campaigns to see if yours got missed somehow.

For concerns about damage, I guess it depends on your service tech. I had my airbag replaced last year. It took about 3 hours and they also changed the transmission fluid at the same time. When I got it back, the only difference I could see was the new trim panel going up the pillar of the windshield. It was new and clean and the other trim panel was dusty. No issues with reassembly.

I have an appointment to change mine out towards the end of January at the Servco Mapunapuna location. I can report back with what they have to do. I was planning on taking pics of everything beforehand just in case too.
Some guys are reporting the dash and center console needs to be pulled to do the replacement.

Is it true the entire dash has to come off for the replacement?
I’m not happy about have any work done on a newer truck, it’s just never the same because of the work quality. What should I expect with this repair?

Here's what the TIS shows for a 2010 model though I can't imagine they did all of this disassembly and reassembly in 3 hours.

I don't get why they have to dismantle the steering column and center console, if they're only replacing the airbag assembly?

This is all I could find with 2012 being the latest year. It is a later version of the document I posted pictures from.

I seriously doubt they do ALL that for the recall.
That shows driver side and A pillar curtain as well as the passenger bag.
I drove into the Round Rock dealer on Sat to order a map update and ask about scheduling the airbag replacement. They said they could do it right then. Gave them the keys and an hour and a half later I was driving away.
No issues with plastic being damaged or not put back correctly.
Everything went very smoothly.
....at least..... as long as they ACTUALLY DID the replacement

Haha either that or you're paying a lot less a year for registration!

Fortunately, they're both the same here, something like $35/year. MY Ram 3500 was about $200/year because PA bases truck registrations on GVW.

Dealer knocked mine out in under 4 hours. I was concerned about dash noise and rattling after but all went smoothly. He said they have 2 dudes who all they do is replace airbags every day. Yikes.
