my knobs seem to be really stiff (or I'm too wimpy) and I don't want to break them. From the looks of it the knobs seem to be screw type.

The outboard knob clamps the cross bar to the side rail. The inboard knob allows the cross bars to be adjusted for length (or width) since the side rails taper from front to back.
