Removing interior cargo plastic to gain space ?

Has anyone removed the plastic cargo area (above the wheel wells) to gain additional width? If so, how much would be gained. My ‘10 has 160,000 miles and I’d rather keep it then buy a new SUV. I need to fit two dog crates side by side

I think there’s some metal under there.

Just removed mine to run dedicated power and installed a fridge. Not too bad but a lot of plastic pins and a pin removal tool would come in handy towards the rear doors

Thanks. Approximately how many inches does the plastic take up? I need to gain 1.5” on either side

... just posted a new thread about this; inner plastic wheel well liners seem to take up substantial space ...

so who has done an improved mod for this?

in the 2 row there is a panel on the top of the wheel wells that you can pop off and see how much room is between the body and the plastic. Not sure if those panels exist on the 3rd rows.

I have all my 1st aid gear in the driver side well. I think it gets pretty tight near the bottom IIRC.
