SR5 Door Handle removal

Does anyone know if there is a recent write up for door handle removals? I just got the color matched handles to replace my chrome SR5 ones.

All the pictures are no longer posting on this older thread.

Thanks

Never actually removed the handle on my 4Runner, but i have on other cars. Im assuming it’s the same concept.

Open the door of the handle you want to remove.
There should be a black plug on the edge of the door adjacent to the handle.
Remove plug and shine a light to see what screw is in there. The ones i’ve seen are Torx. Back the screw off by hand and not by power tool, careful not to back off too much.
Pull on the exterior door handle and slide towards the rear of the vehicle.

If i have some time at work tomorrow I’ll see if its the same.

Thanks, I had the same question. Looks like that is the case. Jump to the 1:00 minute mark in this video to bypass the chuckleheads.

You'll have to remove the door panels to get to the yellow tabs that lock/hold the outer door handle in place, that's the most important thing I learned. And check your new door handles to see if the are hollow like the original ones. 😵 Mine were not.

This video shows the rear door better.

You will need a 30mm Torqx bit

Remove the door panel

These two tabs:

remove these 3 bolts and drop it down

Go in this way to take the 30mm torqx bit out. It is in a captive bracket so you don't have to worry about it falling out

Than you should be able to pull this piece out and the rest of the door handle.

Same?

Is this the same for all four doors?

No, the front doors are just a little different. Instead of going into to remove the both bolts from inside of door you do one from edge of door, otherwise they are the same. On the edge of the door you will see a small black grommet. Once you remove that (do not damage it as you will need to replace it), you will see the head of the bolt right there.

I just replaced all 4 door handles on my 2012 and it was very easy. I've had the door panels off many times so I can get them off and back on in a matter of minutes so this job was quick for me.

Stuck with the keyless 2020.

Ok, been following the threads on this, have the rear door handles out, but am stuck on the drivers. it seems to be hung up on the part circled in red.

Has anyone taken the door handles off of their 2020 with keyless? or any keyless for that matter.

hopefully the attachment shows.

EDIT: Figured it out. Grabbed a sub for TIS and looked up the current specs. There are two latches in the middle of this thing, (just to the left of the green tape) on the top and bottom. release those latches and the green taped part will pivot out toward you. then you put your screwdriver or similar into the slot with the white tab all the way to the left in the circled part. press the tab in toward the right, while pulling on the two black tabs and it will release with the white part attached. if it just pulls the black part, you can release the white part separately and put them back together, like I did with the drivers door. Then flip the yellow thing all the way to the right and pull the handle out like the back ones.

You guys are ambitious. I’m too lazy and reluctant to go that route, so, I purchased these off eBay. Looks like it wil match the dash area finish somewhat above the glove box in my Pro, which, I think is the same as the OR & ORP. Not sure about the SR5. I will see if this is worth it in a week.

Do not be so hard on yourself
me, I'd probably overpaid some guy in the repair shop to fix it

I made a quick video of today's rear handle swap but it is pretty crappy and does not address keyless entry models. Does anyone think the partial license plate display at the beginning is a big deal?

I can't seem to find the part number for replacement chrome door handles. Has anyone else been able to find it? It looks like everything associated with part number 6921160070 comes in a bunch of colors, but no chrome.
