My car buying tips.
Don’t be afraid to walk away. That’s your best tactic.
Call around to several dealers and get price quotes. Use online services to increase your reach. Get a burner gmail and google voice number for services like True Car and Costco Auto Buying Program. When you eventually sit down with your sales rep to hammer out the details, you’ll be able to use the lowest quoted price as a trump card.
Get pre approved for an auto loan from a credit union or other bank. The dealer makes more money if you finance through them, so they may give you a lower sale price if they think they can make up the difference in the finance office. Don’t mention the pre approval until you’re in the finance office (bring a letter/check from the bank with the details).
If you have a trade in, a common sales tactic is to give you a lower price on the new car and low ball you on the trade in. Negotiate the sale price first, then talk about trade in and financing.
Of course, a lot this conventional stuff goes out the window when you’re buying a TRDP. Be sure to call several dealers, look into buying out of state, and walk away if you don’t like the terms.
Good luck!
