I bought the T8 and I've been much happier with it than with the factory head unit, so I'm not going back. However, I do still have my 2019 non-JBL Entune sitting in the garage. Once this update has been released I'm going to re-install it and take my Runner into the dealership for the update. After that's been done I'm ripping the updated unit right back out and selling it, so if anyone is interested in buying it let me know.

Oh well.

Don’t pay $20 a month. I’ve had satellite radio for years and have never paid full price. Call and ask for the cancellation dept and ask for a deal or you’re going to cancel. You can get it for 50% off easily. They keep offering me 5 months for $50 so I’ve been doing that. I call a couple weeks before it’s set to expire and always get the same deal. They even threw in a free echo dot at Christmas time. The 5 months for $50 is for the all access package as I like having the iPhone app as well. There are hundreds of channels available through the app or online. If you don’t care about having the app and just want to listen through your head unit, you can get a lesser package for even less.

All of that can be done in the 4Runner without Apple CarPlay.
And my 4Runner has nav, and I have a Garmin with lifetime maps, so I still don't see the need for carplay.

but if your already an iphone user, carplay is a great benefit in any car. i had it in my m3, x5 and 4runner. i dont need to carry a garmin to get the latest maps. i also have the option to use apple, google or waze maps. siri will read all my texts and make phone calls.
i'm just saying.. if you can get it .. why not?

Stream of consciousness to follow....
Man, this is something I would really love. I haven't enjoyed the look of most of the aftermarket units, excluding the T8 which seemed to be a disaster for most people.
I've done some digging but haven't managed to get farther than it probably won't work for 4runners before 2018. And it maybe might be possible for anything after 2018. Unsure there either. The install files that Toyota are installing seem to be checking which model your vehicle is and will reject the update if the right file isn't used - if you have a compatible head unit but not the right model, then it probably won't work. I thought that there might be more crossover between the head units; the molding/trim would be different but I expected the radio units themselves to be the same between JBL&Nav + non-JBL&Nav.
Anyways, here's what I've found and gathered from the other links/posts in this thread and form the TSB.
Apple CarPlay Update Files (18 Camry/Sienna & 18/19 Lexus Models) - Toyota Nation Forum : Toyota Car and Truck Forums
Head Unit Level | Model | Model ID | Applicable |
---|
Entune Audio Plus | Camry, Camry HV | 17TDT1NA-DA00 | Yes |
| | 17TDT1NA-DA01 | No |
| | All Others | No |
Entune Premium Audio | Camry, Camry HV, Sienna | 17TDT2NA-DA00 | Yes |
| | 17TMT2NA-DA00 | Yes |
| | 17TDT2NA-DA01 | No |
| | 17TMT2NA-DA02 | No |
| | All Others | No |
Downloadable files and instructions if anyone wants to get creative and try hah....

Here's to hoping that a swap from the 2020 HeadUnit is feasable or that they'll release an update for the 4runners sometime this year.

Scosche CD Slot Mount. Works perfectly. 11-12 bucks at BB.
There, problem solved.

Correct. I spoke directly with Toyota customer service and we do not have 3.0. For this reason we will not be eligible for any CarPlay upgrade from Toyota.
