Bad Fuel Gauge Sending Unit

Anyone having issues with their fuel gauge sending unit have the recalibration procedures from the repair manual? Ive seen one 2011 that replaced the sensor. Mines registering just inaccurate. So question is will a recalibration work or does it need a new sensor? Seems a lot of people have had this issue in prior generations but the recal procedures for that do not work.

So long story short I ran out of gas for the second time today with an 1/8 of a tank on the gauge and mileage still on the dte. Yes i know just fill up at 1/4 tank but it should be accurate and I want to fix it.

113k miles. Just replaced spark plugs, transmission fluid, power steering and brake fluid, diffs, transfer case, etc. Original owner and have always babied and maintained it above and beyond the manual.

Any help is appreciated!

Anyone else with advice? Will using the ob2 port and a good scanner allow me to do a recalibration?

The 5th gen can't be recalibrated by the procedures in other threads of past generations.

Did you replace the sensor and it's still not reading correctly?

Hi jjudd,

have you considered the possibility that the float linkage/sliding parts may be hanging-up or binding as a result of an accumulation of dirt or sludge? These older components have been soaking in gasoline/chemical-byproducts for quite some time now, so I can understand why a computerized calibration may not resolve the issue! ...j/s, 'Best to you',

Just thinking...

If it were my truck, under the exact same circumstances, I believe I would remove the fuel tank, pull the fuel sending unit/pump assm, and give it a GOOD cleaning since the fuel pump still works (they can cost upwards of $900 bucks)... plus towing if you're -Out-&-about; what-cha got to lose(?)!

rig, Cheers!
