Anyhow, while probing to figure out just where the problem was it came back and has been OK since. I never figured out why so just shrugged and hoped for the best.
Fast forward to this morning and I was following a coworker into the parking garage and noticed his was out (I think his is a 2016? Mine is a 2011). I told him and he told me this was the third time it's gone out in just a few months.
I reckon this can't be a coincidence - have others run into this? Anyone know a permanent fix?

Take the bulb out and clean the contacts on the bulb assembly that make contact inside the housing. Then bend those contacts out a little more to make better contact. Ours would not work until we bent these out.
