Silicon Valley Auto Show

I see Toyota has a large presence at the Silicon Valley Auto Show in March. Should I expect to see the 2020 4Runner there, or will this be more Camry, Corolla, Highlander territory?

If people will pay, the price will be set accordingly. Capitalism.

Coming from someone owning a BMW and a Mini, I understand as quality is obviously not something you appreciate.

So you think every purchase a person makes throughout their lives is based only on a very finite number of attributes, with quality of utmost concern? Could you define quality? Because that BMW now has 203,000 very hard miles on it, and is in quite good shape.

If you would like to practice some critical thinking, try this. First, look at the model years of those vehicles. You might surmise that those vehicles were purchased in order of model year. Next, think about why a person might go from two arguably exciting BMWs to a relatively featureless Toyota. Perhaps priorities changed? (FYI, some of the tech/features that the 4runner lacks has been around for a decade and already proven to be reliable. That was my point.)

I pay cash for my toys. Maintenance was included the first 3 years. Haven't had a failure on anything yet.

I'm talking about repair bills, genius. And 3 years? Lol... want a medal? Like I said, come back in 5 years. Depreciation numbers don't lie.

No offense taken and sorry if I came off offensive. I am actually quite young, ha ha! Actually I have always liked the M3 and totally get why folks buy them. I am a bit of a purist as far as 4WD’s go, you can probably tell by the other vehicle I own. You must admit though the Japan made Yota’s are really built to last. Not to discount the importance of maintenance. How do you like the mini?

We've got a 2017 340i, and a 2009 128i. They have only needed routine maintenance with zero problems. Only repair on the 128i was the waterpump which took me 2 hours to do on my own and at 105k miles, I don't think that is unreasonable. Fantastic cars that are truly fun to drive. The B58 from the 340 is in the new supra, Toyota must think there aren't many issues if they would use it and not worry about offering a longer warranty than BMW offers.

Funny you should say that. Our 2013 is going on 6 years and about 70k miles old. Not broke (yet). In fact, besides regular maintenance, it had one repair completed under warranty (window regulator). That said, the engine in the 2013 addressed many of the issues that gave mini its reputation. You know where the quality really lacks? The interior - it rattles and squeaks worse than any other vehicle that I've experienced, including 90's GMs.

Labor is expensive across all brands and types of vehicles, so lets ignore that (nobody with any financial intelligence would take an out-of-warranty Mini or BMW to the dealership). As far as parts costs, I did some research on replacing the shocks and related hardware as I expect to do that soon - pretty much at a midpoint between my M3 and any average vehicle and a super easy repair. You pay a premium for performance, and it's simply unreasonable to think that parts for a Mini/BMW should be similar to a Camry because the former is in an entirely different performance class.

I hear ya, no offense taken and I definitely wasn't arguing that point! After 13 years, I'm gearing up to sell the M3. It's going to be tough but we're buying a house without a garage, and the DC metro area sucks for trying to enjoy a performance vehicle -- traffic, and always a minivan or crossover around to ruin twisty roads. We've had way more opportunity (and fun) taking the 4runner on camping trips and light offroading.

Mini (wife's car) is a lot of fun and is entirely responsible for her going from someone who couldn't force herself to care about cars beyond doing point A to B, into someone who very much does.
