Since I've posted a few updates on these over the past couple months, figured I'd give another one after my trip out to the Washington coast which, with winter showing up, lead to a lot of night-driving out in the pitch black boonies.
So I installed the "matching" Morimoto XB foglights a couple weeks ago and had them on just to see if I noticed a difference in combination with the XB headlights.
I was towing my 3000 lb travel trailer but I've got a weight distribution hitch so the 4Runner is relatively level when towing, but obviously it's still got a little rear sag. With the headlights and foglights on simultaneously, I was getting high-beam flashed by literally everyone including someone in a lifted pickup truck. Big yikes.
I turned the foglights off and for the rest of the trip I was only getting flashed by small cars. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what you're supposed to do when towing is, by default, going to change your headlight projection. I'm sure as hell not going to adjust the headlights every time I tow something.
I don't think that scenario would change anything with HID bulbs in the projector housings; I'm assuming it would only make it worse to oncoming drivers. I couldn't believe the fog lights were that blinding though seeing as I have them aimed waaaay low and they're supposed to be DOT approved and able to run without blinding people. So that was kind of strange. Can't imagine what kind of light output those crazy Baja fog lights give out if these are that bright.
I also pulled into a little loop off the main road to check the map and I definitely realized what everyone's complaints were about. I could not see the edge of the roadway in the little loop out the side window as I drove around it. So if you're encountering that situation frequently based on where you live, I can understand why these would make you uncomfortable. I didn't think to turn on the foglights to see if they filled in the gap since it was already pretty late and I just wanted to get to the campsite.
This isn't a huge deal to me since 97% of my driving is in the city and I can generally compensate when I'm out in the sticks and that was really the only situation where I felt like I needed better side lighting, but it wasn't exactly a dangerous situation.
I am concerned about getting flashed while towing, but again, I have no idea how to alleviate that since any headlight is going to blind people at a certain angle under loaded-down conditions. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
|
I mean I got flashed while towing with my 4runner while running the stock headlights. That's just the way it goes when your nose is pointed up like that.
Been super busy with school this week, but should have a chance to install them this weekend.

I like the headlights but I can’t see myself spending some extra money on headlights that doesn’t have and leveling motor already included!
I know it’s not requested here (STUPID), over in Europe every vehicle after ‘91 have to have a little motor in each headlight and a leveling wheel switch (like the one for interior lights) to adjust the headlights to the load of your vehicle and they had H4 back in the days.
now with Xenon light it has to be full automatically within milliseconds that even a bump in the road doesn’t blind the oncoming traffic.
That’s a little too fancy but just that old school by hand feature would be awesome. It’s a matter of fact that driving at night time of this side of the Atlantic sucks, you got blinded all the time!
Anyway, I would be in the market for the headlight with that feature even for some dollars on top but...

Yeah, that's kind of what I figured. I've honestly probably got my headlights set too low for non-loaded driving right now. But yeah, I suppose it is what it is when the trailer's hooked up.

I am ready to pull the trigger on these but I question if Morimoto has actually addressed the shortcomings that other posters have mentioned. My main concern is the light cutoff on the sides. Do we know if the “pre production” units issues have been addressed in the newer production models? I would love to see pics of more recent sets that have been sold if possible. Thanks in advance!

It's been stated multiple times by various people including
@ XenonDepot
that the units for sale right now are no different than "pre production" ones (they weren't actually "pre production" they were just the first production run)

I was in the same boat that while it wouldn’t have been right to the initial buyers, I was hoping that the shortcomings were addressed in a revision. That’s a bummer, I can’t swallow safety over looks.

^ is correct. The ones that were originally sent out was not "pre production" they were actual production headlights. The ones that were in stock (we will get more) are the same ones still.

Just had these installed professionally, and the turn signal is very fast. Any thoughts?
They went into a 2020 trd pro, with Baja design fogs.

Do you have aftermarket LED lights in the taillights? You'll have to add a resistor.
2014+ T4R Tri-LED Projector / Sequential Headlights
If not, it may be something else.

I do think it's unusual that we don't have auto leveling headlights as a standard feature. Even a lot of USA market trucks don't have them. The Tundra does. I'm not sure who else does it. The Fortuner for example has dash adjustable headlight leveling. I wonder if a servo one of those lights could be fitted to the 4Runner. There's a kit for the Tundra to add it to earlier models that didn't have it.
The bi xenons is a very simple adjustment to the shield, so those are internal on most OEM HIDs. The retrofit kits almost never have that type of adjustability in them either.
