They have the option of you sending the defective unit back first, but who wants to drive around for weeks without a headlight?

I’ve had my headlights about 10 months, and have had a failure every 5 months. I’m not enthused.
I would ask for a set of the 2nd gen at no charge. They knew these are screwed up... why else would they re-design, re-tool and make a new one

I wish. The crazy thing is that my warranty claim was for yellowing. After my claim was accepted, the LED burned out while driving home.

So after almost a year of usage, the issue where the LED in the corners of each DRL either flickers or goes out completely started occurring on my set of headlights so it was time to submit a warranty claim.

I worked with the original vendor (HID Kit Pros) to start the process of replacing the set under warranty. Once I was transferred over to Morimoto, it took 3 business days to receive the advanced replacement set. I opted to pay a core deposit for the advanced replacement as I didn't want to send in the defective set first, reinstall the stock units, then repeat the process when the new lights arrived. The core deposit was reasonable and I did receive a Gen2/V2 set of headlights as the replacements which is consolation for the time spent.

Contrary to the bad experiences some have reported in dealing with warranty or RMA, my warranty replacement was as smooth as could be. Morimoto was super responsive and I think the process took a total of 5 calendar days from start to finish with two of those days being the weekend.

My impressions -- The Gen2 headlights are what the V1s should have been. Although the V1 headlights were better than the stock units, they weren't perfect. The Gen2 no longer projects a spotlight-ish beam pattern and the dark spots at the corners are gone. I could go on about how much they've improved but the pictures may do all that. The lateral illumination is much better.

Overall I am quite happy with the replacement lights. I just hope this isn't an annual drill. At least there are 4 years left of warranty if anything goes wrong.

I’ll request gen 2 replacements next time mine bites the dust. It’s a matter of time at this point. The corner LED must have an issue with the heat sink. I’ll point them to your post if they give me any problems about the upgrade.

You're probably right -- those Gen1 units will fail again at some point. I do hope the support issues that some folks experienced earlier this year was a blip due to the unexpected events early on with the pandemic along with the Morimoto merger/acquisition.

I can't believe how quick they were to process the warranty claim and would encourage folks to start monitoring their DRL strips if they haven't noticed the failed LEDs. Thought mine were good to go but wasn't the case as it was very intermittent and sometimes one, both, or neither LED was out. I was finally able to catch one or both out in pictures to ensure there was proof of the defect. At this point Morimoto should be aware of how widespread this issue is and shouldn't be resistant to swap out the lights via warranty. At least I hope not.

The positive that resulted from taking my time to submit a claim was the gen2 replacements. Had I submitted the warranty claim earlier, the replacements might have been the gen1s again. I am glad we do have a 5-yr warranty compared to some of the competitor products.
