Trailer hitch fold down cargo carrier?

Hi everyone,

A freind of mine had one for his jeep liberty. It sat in the trailer hitch and would fold down when you needed to use it.

I am wondering if anyone here has used or.seen anything similar for a 4runner?

Thank you,

Joe

I believe they are universal. As long as it fits correctly in the receiver.

The 2 inch receiver hitch on your 4Runner should accept any hitch folding cargo carrier that fits that receiver.

Keep in mind you have a 500lb tongue weight rating on your hitch so you can’t exceed that with the combined weight of the carrier and cargo in it. So the lighter the carrier the better. HF has an aluminum carrier non-folding for only $90… How important is it folding to you? I’ve used cargo carriers and rarely left them in when not in use since they prevent access to the hatch and tend to get in the way. I remove them once I get to my destination… just some thoughts.

I have a fold down carrier and it's a piece of shit. To be able to fold there's an allowable looseness in the bolts that act as hinges. As you drive and the thing wobbles around the holes become elongated and you either have to go oversize or find bushings to "tighten" it back up. I've never had anywhere near the rated 500lb capacity. Also to be able to fold it will have a little bit of sag. TBH, in all the years I have had it and used it, I rarely fold it up

I bought one for my FJ40 but I have to sell the FJ due to health. I didn't feel I needed it with my 4Runner. Sold it to a guy with a Jeep Wrangler 4-door. We installed it but his hitch pin was too short by about 1/4 inch. I dug up a stove bolt and he used that.

Seemed nice enough for light to moderate use.

Ok then let me ask this if you occasionally had to haul around 8-12 bales of hay and other times 2 25 gallon trash bins and couldn't use a trailer would I have to give uo the dream if owning a 4runner and go back to a tacoma?

I just bought one from Harbor Freight for $63. It doesn’t fold up, but for less than half the price anywhere else, I can just take it off when not in use.

8-12 bales of hay? That’s not fitting on a hitch carrier.

I would do it in 2-3 runs as where I get hay is less than 10 miles from my house.
