Synthetic Oil Change for $17
In December I scored 7 quarts of Mobil 1 5W-20 Annual Protection for $2 a quart. Purchased a new OEM oil filter + drain plug washer for $4.
Today I changed my oil, my T4R has 28,000 miles, and the old oil had 7,500 miles. I added copper anti-seize to all the skid plate bolts and will run this oil for 7,500 miles. Not a bad final price for Mobil 1 and a little DIY. Job took 45 minutes to complete.

Nobody cares unless you tell us where you got the stuff so cheap, and if the deal is still going.

Shouldn't you be using 0W-20?

Wouldn't that be $18 spent (7q oil x $2 = 14 plus $4 filter/washer) ?

Yep - 0W-20 is the correct oil used in the 5th Gen 4R Dual VVT-I
Single VVT-I...ie…2nd Gen Tacoma uses 5W-30

That's a great deal. Wrong oil weight though!

Truck won't know the difference at CA temps, and may even be a more stable oil (although that's not really an issue in these engines).

correct on your comment .. he probably was high on drugs and hit the wrong key ..
also the taxes on his oil purchase would be more than $17....since he is from CA....
then using the wrong engine oil spec.

That just proves that you know very little about oil sir. Any idea how the VVT-i works??? I didn't think so.
Toyota even startes in the manual that 5W-20 can be used in a pinch but should be changed out asap.

Yeah. Not true.
20 weight oils are very shear stable. And the difference between 0w and 5w is cold weather pumpability and not much else. Living in MN? I'd be hesitant. CA? Not so much.

I know exactly what the differences are but you know better then Toyota engineers so do what you want.

Then what's the harm? Viscosities at operating temps are nearly identical as are most of the other specs. Pour point is different but that doesn't hardly matter at temperatures above zero.

Cold start up is the point. These engines have very tight tolerances. It's pretty simple just to use the correct oil. The end.
Toyota does sample and analyze the oil on an engine claim. What's going to happen to this guy's engine warranty when Toyota finds the wrong weight oil in his blown motor. And I'm not even saying it's going to happen from 5W oil. I'm just playing devil's advocate here.
