nice wheel/tire in spare spot
I am upsizing my tires and was wondering who all keeps a nice wheel and tire in the spare spot.
I have an extra trd pro wheel that I was going to use on a hitch mount or if I get a bumper with a swing arm in the future. But instead of getting another tire to toss on the regular spare wheel, I was thinking about putting the trd pro wheel and new tire underneath.
Does the wheel/tire get beat up living in the spare location? If its down there I likely will use it as part of the rotation, but dont really want to do that if its just going to get scuffed/scratched under there. (I do realize its not a show truck, but still dont want extra scratches on the black rims if I dont have to). Otherwise I will just get an extra tire to put on the spare wheel.
Thanks!

the outside of the wheel is on top, but you do rub the tires on stuff.
it just comes down to what size tire and if you don't mind the impact to your clearance

nice wheel/tire in spare spot
I just switched from KO2’s in stock size to 285/70/17’s on my 16 Trail. I like the trail wheels and got a 5th wheel for the spare so I can rotate it in. Only issue I realized, and my fault as should have done my homework, is there is no TPMS sensor in the spare (Toyota in all its wisdom only adds a 5th in the Limited spare, and the ability for the truck to sense it, according to posts I’ve read on this forum). So come time to rotate I’ll either get a TPMS sensor in the spare and figure out the best way to get the truck to pick it up or just say the heck with it and rotate only 4.
To answer one of your questions, I just put the spare back under the truck with the outside part of the wheel facing up to best protect it. 285 fits no problem.

Didnt think about the sensor. They mounted the tire today and I didnt think about that because I was thinking it was going to be my extra.

I know I have seen that the tire sometimes gets rubbed pretty good, I saw a picture of someones stock spare at some point.
Probably overkill, but something like this may protect the tire sidewall and wheel too.

After like 6 years I ended up needing to use my factory spare underneath. I lucked out that it had air in it (maybe Discount Tire was checking it for me?). I was surprised how worn the sidewalls were in the points they touched the under body of the truck. Divots in the sidewalls. It worked though and got me back to civilization. (We ran over some metal at an old mine.)

Even though its tight under there, the constant vibration or small movements definitely seem to be enough to wear on it. Thats my worry about including it in the rotation.

What year? I think they stopped in 2012, but could be wrong. Mine definitely doesn’t have one.

Anyone know just how strong that stock tire winch chain is? Thinking about mounting a spare 295/70 under there, 100 pound wheel and tire combo. I do have concerns about failure though and definitely don't want the wheel and tire falling off going down the road at 70 mph

A tire hitch is a possible alternative. The Rigd ultra swing can fit up to a 35

I have a wilco hitchgate. But it's only going on for adventures. Hence why I have a nice wheel as a spare. But the other times it will be underneath. Dont really want to have two spares, one for underneath and one for wilco.

You’re lucky—guess they started including them in spare again.
