2016 Peeling Headlights

I washed my car today and noticed peeling on my right headlight. I'm out of warranty so no dealership for me.

It's only 3.5 years old.. I can't believe it. What can/should I do to prevent this from happening? Any fixes?

Welcome to damaging uv from the sun. My new lights I bought for my Camry 4 years ago are all peeled now too and turning yellow. Not much you can do other than sand, polish and clear them again or buy new ones.

A good quality headlight lens polish kit helps. Maguire’s and Mothers has worked fine for me. A kit usually comes with a drill mounted polishing disk or ball, which takes a lot of the elbow grease out of it. They also usually come with various grits of sandpaper from about 800 to 2000 grit. But even simple wipe on/buff off stuff works well if used regularly.

The lamp’s design will cause the top surface to be affected by the sun’s UV rays the most. By the time the sun starts hitting the vertical face, the solar angle is too great to affect the lens, and then later the sun will be setting thus the UV diminished by the atmosphere. The front face of the lens won’t need as much attention.

I usually polish the headlights on my vehicles at least annually, but the wrap over the top lights on my Subaru Outback needs it twice. And be sure to get a can of spray on sealer made for headlights. Extends the life of all your hard work.

I also found that periodically alternating and parking pointing opposite the afternoon and evening sun slows down the process. Taillights don’t seem to be affected by the sun.

Crazy, I just washed mine today and noticed the same thing on the same part of the cover. I live in the Phoenix area, but never noticed this on my Saturn car I had out here for 10 years.
I have a 2016 4R.

take them to a body shop and ask them to fix the lights. or polish and take there if you dont know someone.

should be able to have someone at a body shop spray them with a few coats of clear for $100 or so. far better than any at-home spray on stuff from the store

I wonder if this would be covered with Toyota platinum care? Very unfortunate to see this happening on a vehicle 3 to 4 years old...

Any car that sits in the sun every day it will happen on with the plastic headlights.

I just bought a use 2014 and got a scrap of Matt black from a car wrap place and just covered the front and rears. Arizona sun kills them fast.

It’s the stuff they use to wrap cars, basically a heavy sticker material. Just cut some patterns out of poster board then transferred to the sticker material. The place just gave me a scrap piece for free, so when they get crappy I’ll just cut a new set. We’ll see how long it lasts?
