Bear with me here guys if this is a stupid question-I am a new 4Runner TRD Off Road owner and out of town (without truck) so can't look at docs or try stuff...is it not necessary to shift to neutral when engaging (or disengaging) 4WD with an TRDOR?

Only for 4L. You can shift to 4H under 60 mph.

It did make me a little nervous. But I haven't had any problems since. If it was something that was constant all the time I could see it being a larger concern. But if its a once in a while one off I can live with it.

You're not going to destroy it but why stress the driveline in this manner if you don't have to, save it for off road!

If you're moving the lever down while driving expect to feel a little resistance or a defined click as it goes into place, everything is turning so it won't be like butter. Shifting back up while moving however should be like butter but don't expect the front end to disengage right away as someone mentioned, there needs to be some torque transfer, come off the gas then back on it which should do it right away.

No, I sometimes put it in 4H at stoplights for the first 100ft or so then shift back into 2H. All straight lines. This time I did it inside a parking garage in the straight section then I turned the corner and forgot to take it out of 4H. Thats when it started to bind. Lesson learned.

My 2007 Tacoma wouldn't engage or disengage worth a damn. Binding slows it down even more I believe. Our old f350 that's been beat to hell and back still works instantly, Toyota needs some work in the 4x4 department as its the only brand I've ever had 4x4 issues with.
