Buy a 2019 or 2020 if the 3.5 will be the power plant for the 6th gen
Apparently, people on the 3rd gen Tacoma forum are having issues “hydrolocking” their trucks on a steep incline while off-roading. Whoever is on the fence and hasn’t decided to purchase a 4Runner with the 4.0 should maybe consider it if the 3.5 is the standard engine for the 6th gen.

For guys that wheel hard, a oil catch can would most likely solve the issue. It's less then a $100 fix but still not something you should have to do.
People whine and complain about the 4.0Ls lack of power and economy but it sure a damn rock solid engine. Personally I'd hate to see the 3.5L in the 6th Gen but doubt it'll slow down sales. Toyota's has got to fix the economy issue somehow.

If the 3.5L makes it into the 4Runner than I'll be keeping my '14 for life. We had a '16 Tacoma and compared to the 4.0L that motor blows and the fuel economy wasn't enough to make up for the lack of power and constant transmission shifts.

In a thread a while back a Texas dealer supposedly has close ties to Toyota and said they are testing a new power plant for mid size plus he got to ride in the tundra mule. For what its worth...
I think the 3.5 was a quick fix while they figured out a new Tacoma. The 3rd gen isnt any different than the 2005 truck, its sheet metal and a reworked Toyota 3.5 v6... they are just now "fixing" the driver fit issues with a power seat but it's still too small...

I'd be surprised if they put a 3.5. Maybe if they did the redesign the close to when the Tacoma did it, but at this point I really dont think they would go that route.

I think Toyota made a mistake by hiring Mike Sweers to be the lead designer, he worked at Chrysler before. What once was an amazing truck which killed the competition, will slowly lose its status as the top seller... really sad, I just hope you guys are right that the 6th gen will not be using the 3.5. If it does well then you won’t be able to do the things you could do in any of the previous generations... off-road.

They need to bring back the V8 option like the 4th Gens had, I'd be in for that

They won't do a V8 because of cafe mpg and also because it'd eat into the reasons people buy up into the Lexus 460.

My money is on a 2.4l turbo that they're supposedly testing in the lexus models. 318hp. ??tq. My guess is the toyota version is ~300hp/tq. But much better low rpm torque. The 2.0 turbo is a dog on paper, but makes 100%tq at 1650 rpms and the output is basically just electronically limited through the range. It feels very much normally aspirated due to the ECU capping torque output. Its not my ideal choice, but a 2.4 turbo similarly made would be a fine engine choice.

That would be a cheaper option for Toyota as the 4.0 is probably not a inexpensive engine.

you can only hope
Put the 3.5 in the runner, and you'll be mashing the pedal big time to get it to move, red limit reviving, multiple down shifts heck you'll never get tired of the race car screaming machine, put those fancy tires and paint it pink inside and you'll be styling...oh wait think some of us are doing this already love this place.

While we are just making stuff up, here’s my prediction: the next engine will be cold fusion, won’t use gas, and will have infinite horsepower:-)
