Brake issue

5 gen 4 runner with 295x70x17
Icon stage 7 kit

My brake padel travels down a lot befor brakes are on, I went to the dealer they said it's normal
I replace the rotors and pads with ebc green stuff and slotted rotors
Also had the dealer flushed brake fluid and replaced with race fluid
Still no change.

Anyone know of a brake upgrade kit with bigeer calipers?

When you replaced pads did the pistons have a hard time going back in? These things are known to have seized calipers.

I don't know about pushing them down and them not being applied at all, but I can tell you that they are not super sensitive until they are. So soft sensitivity until you get to a certain point and then grabby. That's my biggest complaint about the 4Runner. In rush hour traffic when you need medium braking they tend to grab and squeal the tires, then when you let off they let off too much. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Hi leo4x4,

My 4Runner is a 2012 LE... not that should make a difference! But I don't experience the "Long-Travel/Soft-pedal" issue that you've described. Now you're using a 295/70 R17 tire(?)!

The 295mm represents the width of the tire in mm, and the 70 describes the height; which is 70% of the (295mm) width, or 11.8 inches wide, equals 8.26 inches high from the rim to the ground (my 275/55 R20 is 6 inches high from the rim to the ground)!

That's a pretty tall/high tire; likely giving you a 'GREAT' mpg, but stopping will suffer... there's NO free lunch; there's ALWAYS a trade off! So let me ask you... did you think to compare the brake pedal 'Before' the tire swap? My guess is that this issue started after the swap... just a theoretical guess!

As far as I know, there have been no written-up complaints regarding squishy brakes on the Gen-5 4Runners since I've been a part of this community... that doesn't mean that it is the tires, just that it could be a factor! 'Best to you',

rig

I have a 2019 Offroad and can agree with you that the brake pedal feel is very disappointing to say the least. I also went back to the dealer and had them checked out and "it's normal." Wish there was a simple way to adjust them. Even my 85 BMW E30 has better pedal feel than this.

Edit: the rig is still on stock suspension and wheels

OP said he changed the brake fluid type? Why? Is the new stuff compatible with factory components/seals?

...You must still remember,

The ABS and Anti-skid control Grabs-n-Releases the rotors in 'ms', so it's controlling the amount of pressure placed upon the rotors to slow/stop the vehicle w/o losing traction; which may be why the dealership said that this is normal! ...J/S,

rig, cheers!

That's exactly what I think
I also have a 2019 tundra all stock and the pedal is great.

Changed the brake fluid because the original brake fluid was boiling at stop and go traffic and I would lose my pedal

I do realize that using a bigger tire would take away from my breaking a little bit however I've had that problem even when the car had stock tires

Your original post mentioned replacing brake fluid with Race Fluid. I'm not sure what you mean.

At long lights you could switch to neutral. Is there any other mods that could contribute to heat soak issues?

Edit: just saw your pic with Supercharger. This can add to heat soak problems. Especially with Stop/go traffic. How much do you weigh with all of the mods? Have you upgraded the cooling system?
