The only way they can steal the 4th and 5th Gen is with a tow truck or if someone has one of the original keys or copied the key/chip.
Thieves today sure can steal your ride without a key - they have gone high-tech, too!

The Limited 4Runners come with a "Push" start and those are easy to steal. They just need a scanner to pick up the key fob code and transmit it back to the vehicle then push the button and go.

It's been said to keep your keys in a metal box, it will block any signals and keep it away from the front of the house and far away from the vehicle.

Their was another story about a gang of guys working at a Toyota Dealership in Canada that would copy keys on New 4Runners. Once the truck was sold they would locate the vehicle and steal it with the copied key.

Did the Denali have a push start? If so, that could be why it was stolen so easily. I'm not too familiar with GMC trucks so I don't know.

I would also question the people that work at the tire shops. think about it, they now know where you live.
I have an older Pickup that's my wife's daily driver. Every month or so I get a note on the windshield asking if I want to sell it.
Its just a matter of time before it disappears and will be parted out. It's being watched. It has protection but like someone stated two guys with a flat bed and its gone. I have insurance.

As our trucks get older there will be more of a demand for parts. so just because your truck is a few years old don't think its not wanted by thieves.
I had a 1976 chevy 4X4 pick-up garage kept for 18 years.I parked it in my driveway for a week. Ten days later I was in a impound yard Identifying the remains.
Iíve lived in LA for 15 years, never had a car stolen.

Iíve had my S-10 and a WRX broken into, but they never stole it.

The S-10 was probably due to the fact that it was a piece of shit that took some tricky throttle management to make it start without flooding it. I got a really nice leatherman out of it in exchange for a mostly empty CD wallet. It was a fair trade (they slim Jimmed the lock).

My WRX had two kill switches wired into it that ran off an aftermarket alarm. The alarm ignition kill circuit powered a pair of relays by the center console and by the fuel pump under the rear seat which took two bolts to access. Kill switch relay 1 used a turbo timer harness to break the ignition circuit in the steering column. Relay two killed the fuel pump power if the first relay was disabled, the turbo timer harness removed, or the alarm was cut.

Only downside was the relay could kill the battery if the car was left parked for too long. But it was a manual so push starts were a thing...

I don't know how many people use it but I still put the club on my steering wheel.

Yes I know the wheel can be cut but just so they can see what they are up against is better than nothing.

Owl Cam

Iíve actually been using Owl Cam! So far so good. Sends notifications to your phone. Detects movement and is automatically uploaded to their cloud storage. A bit pricy but I feel like its worth it. Owlcam - Video security for your car, driving & parked

I believe it did, which would make more sense on the 5 min lift.

how long have you been using it? im on the fence about spending $400 on something that can be stolen in a few seconds.

Been using it about a month and a half. The cool thing is that it senses when someone is in your car. So it has both an outside and inside camera. When someone enters your car, it actually shines light on them and sends you a notification to your phone. It is then uploaded directly to their cloud storage so you should be able to access your footage later. Another cool thing is if they steal the camera, the company replaces it for free. Honestly its a win win situation for me. Feel free to do more research on it though.

There are a few people that donít like it but it works for me. I do hope for some upgrades though.

I spoke to him today and it didn't have push start ignition. Crazy.

DIY throttle kill switch

Hi everyone, very interesting thread! I want to secure my 2011 sr5 4Runner, but I live in a place that gets pretty cold in winter so I'd love to be able to keep my remote start working.

The sprint booster kill switch idea on the throttle sensor is very interesting for that purpose, but I'm absolutely not interested in its main feature so not worth the price, and it will be too visible and lead straight to a plug very easy to remove...

So I want to go for a splice kill switch directly on the harness, my only problem is there seem to be quite a few wires leaving that plug and I'm not sure which one to slice in... Can anyone help me with that?

The Z-Lok is a key operated hood-locking & ignition kill system that is custom fit to each vehicle. It works on trucks, vans and cars. The security system is designed to be the only protection that your vehicle will need.
If your vehicle has a GPS system or factory car alarm, the Z-lok HoodLock is great for added protection because it is fully mechanicalized.

The VIPER 507M Digital Tilt Sensor from Directed is ideal for protecting a vehicle from theft by detecting when the vehicle is being raised by a tow truck or lifted using a jack, in an attempt to remove the wheels or tow the vehicle. The 507M auto calibrates each time the alarm is armed, referencing the vehicle’s angle of inclination and ensuring the most accurate tilt sensing possible. The 507M is perfect for protecting vehicles with upgraded wheels and tires.

Unless you have the 5th gen thatís push to start. They just have to wait until you use the key fob to unlock the car to copy the signal.

About a month or two ago, the news reported a lot of Lexus and Toyotaís being stolen because of that.

Copying the code wonít work, itís Like a rolling code. What they use is a relay device that retransmit the communications between the key-fob and the car. Everything has to be within range and in real time.
You can buy these chips that will disconnect the battery in the key if no movement is detected within a set time period or place it in a shielded bag.

The vehicle can't be stolen from using the remote start as it shuts off as soon as you open the door, and they key fob is needed for restart.
