I had a local garage install Bilstein 5100s on front (.75) and rear w/o rear spacers stock springs. I drove it over the weekend and the front shocks were making a popping noise when riding over bumps or train tracks. I took it back and the mechanic said the shock threads bottomed out on top of the spring. He said he had to add a spacer he found lying around in his garage to put on top of shock.
Is it me or is there something missing here? I want to take it to another shop and have them check the work but wanted some informed opinions from here too. That is why I joined this site. There seem to be a bunch of enthusiasts who probably know more about Toyotas than your typical small town mechanic.
Yes, you are at least missing the isolation bushing and washer under the nut. Should look like this.

These shocks made a bigger improvement that I expected. The nose dive while breaking is just about gone. The 4R is firmer/tighter overall. If anyone is concerned with the 'firm' comments in other posts don't be. These things should ride like this from the factory. The best way to describe the factory shocks is 'sloppy'.
I agree. I installed mine about the same time as you and the ride/nose dive is definitely better. I added the 10mm spacer in the rear so I still have some factory rake. Happy with the result.

Any black Friday sales?
I'm looking at getting these to help with the ride but I will also want to add some new coils to give me a bit more of a lift.

How hard are these to install on your own?

Thanks

I know this is about Bilsteins, but Eibach has their complete lift with shocks & springs on sale right now...just an idea.

The rubber bushing and washer should have came with the struts in the hardware bag, along with a new top nut. You will not be able to install a new bushing, washer and nut without compressing the spring and strut.

The install is certainly something you can do yourself, but it all depends on what your mechanical ability is and your access to tools/equipment. The springs/strut is under a great deal of compression, so caution must be used... You can find instructions on the forum. I installed both front and rear 5100s with Cornfed spacers in rear solo in my garage. Without a spring compressor.

The original P rated Dunlop 265/70/17 tires on my 2018 TRD ORP are done and I am considering replacing them with either:

1. Falken P rated 265/70/17's alone, or

2. Falken LT C rated 275/70/17's with Bilstein 5100's front and rear.

The local 4WP shop tech has been very helpful and is suggesting that for what I want (minimal lift, better ride on/off road) I should consider going the second route and using Bilstein coils for a 1" lift in the rear and adjusting the front 5100's to level out the ride (at about 2-2.5"?).

What do you think? I will try to attach 2 pages of the proposed invoice with details of the parts and the pricing. Do you think the labor is too high? I am in California! LOL

Thanks for your help with this decision!

If I run the front at 1.75 I know I need a spacer for the back. Should I go 3/4 or 1” spacer?

We wanted to share a Quick Update on Bilstein 5100's.

The Rear 5100's, Part #33-187174, are currently on Manufacturer Backorder.

The production facility in Ohio was shut down for a few weeks, but opened
up last week and started resuming production.

We shipped out our last stock of 5100's over the weekend.

We hope to have these back In-Stock and Ready to Ship in the next couple of
weeks at the latest.

Bilstein has always been good at spreading out availability to Distributors and Authorized
Dealers, so we could see limited availability start arriving at anytime while they work on
getting stock levels back to normal.

We look forward to sharing details on availability and shipping as we hear from Bilstein.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions.
