I have used Mobil 1 for...er...decades. (Said in my old man voice)

Here is why. I had an Audi 4000 way back when (loved that car, best snow car ever). I only ran Mobil 1 in it. Went to trade it in with 150k on it (hard ski miles every year every weekend). It was in great shape but they did a compression test on it and it was still in new car tolerances. The mechanic came out and asked “how”. Got way over book trade in for it. So that made me a fan. Bought this car used while in college from a friend of a friend that lived in TX and only used it for a yearly ski trip. Only had 8k on it, looked new, got it for 9k which was a huge deal, traded it in and got 7k!

Let’s be honest though, 150k on an Audi is like 500k+ on a 4R

I am on another car forum, a whole other level of OCD. We are talking oil testing after every oil change..not me, them. But reading through those posts I am sold on Amsoil now. I started running it in that car and it is noticeable. It is a manual so I also run their transmission oil in it, that difference was HUGE, no more notch feel even when cold, so smooth and slick. I just buy cases from them, since it is hard to find.

I buy it by the case from a local rep in my area. Comes out to be a bit less than $6 a quart.

I have used Mobil One for many years with NAPA Gold (Wix) filters. My 2003 4runner has 187000 on it and uses NO oil between changes.

I snicker at those that say Mobil One is junk. They don't know.

Haven't tried any of their 0W-20 offerings, but I used Motul and Ravenol extensively in a VW TDI: 5W-30 507 spec oil. Both are quality brands. Ravenol doesn't seem to be well known in the states.

OMG, yet another synthetic oil brand question !! LOL, for sure Mobil 1 is the best because I have been using it on all my vehicles since 1985. I have never had an engine related failure in millions of miles.

Seriously though, any good synthetic oil is going to be an excellent choice so long as it meets the minimum specs. I would use Toyota Syn oil except I can't get it on sale at Costco.

Oil thread bump. Manual doesn't specify what 0w-20.

Whats in it from the factory? Full synthetic?

10k intervals, means each change at the dealer will be the Toyota branded stuff that is full synthetic, correct?

I have had 2 different people at the dealership tell me two different things. Sorry for the dumb question but I read my manual and search the forum.

0w-20 only comes in synthetic. The factory fill is a Toyota specific formulated 0w-20 made by Exxon Mobil.

Adding a data point from my '07 4Runner, I ran two intervals of Valvoline synthetic high mileage and had the same outcome...valvetrain ticking noise at hot idle.

I'd been running Pennzoil synthetic high mileage (and their conventional high mileage after the timing chain replacement) and it was quiet. Just changed back to Pennzoil high mileage last weekend and the engine is quiet again.

Rhetorical question:

Why does every forum have an oil thread?

By definition, an oil that meets a certain specification will work the same as another oil that meets the same spec - aside from the fact that there are very few (if any) lubrication related issues with modern cars.

Any seat of the pants differences felt are merely imaginary and can't be measured.

In addition, many of the boutique oils don't meet any specs but tout that they are the best thing since sliced bread.

Well that is until Ford claimed the CK-4 spec Delo oil that Chevron is making doesn't provide enough protection for ANY of the powerstrokes ever produced, while other brands of CK-4 are okay as long as they meet Fords F-1 spec. So yeah oil topics can be a mess, most of which is caused by oil company/vehicle manufacture marketing.

Then it didn't meet a spec that Ford required. Actually, Ford stated that it would not recommend the use of any CK-4 oils, but would create their own requirements. Here is the Ford statement on the new oil specs while the Chevron position is here.

There are general standards (API etc) and then there are manufacturer specifications. A lubricant can meet a general standard without meeting the manufacturer spec or it can meet the specs for several manufacturers.

The bottom line is that if an oil meets a spec then it is just like any other oil that meets the same spec.

M1 is better. The EP version is more robust than the AFE version for only $2 more per gallon.

Experienced a lot of interesting stuff in the racing world. Funny when race teams dump out one brand of oil and pour a different brand into the bottle...cameras can't tell which brand oil is in the bottle.

Same here in Late Model circle track racing, the bottle was whoever paid the sponsor $$. What was in the bottle was another matter entirely...always Valvoline VR1 30W or the engine builder would throw a hissy fit.
