Keep the RamMount, just order a larger size X-grip. I use the X-Grip for 8" tablet. The phone (Samsung S7) easily slips in and out of the bottom pair of nubs with one hand but has enough tension to stay on all but the hardest hits off-road. I had tried using a smaller X-grip but, like you, hated I couldn't get it in/out one handed.

Picture shows the top pair of retainers in use, but it was shortly after I installed it. I've since gone to using the bottom pair so that it doesn't interfere with the volume and power buttons.

Diffinitive cell phone mount solution thread?-a8b9638c-c297-48a9-afe8-2c650864459b-jpg

Sorry if the picture is a weird size. It’s a cropped screenshot.

I went with the Expedition Essentials T4RPAM. It’s going to be more expensive and labor intensive to install but it’s a solid product. You can mount ram mounts all over the place and they sell phone specific mounts that hold the phone in place but can it can be removed with one hand. I’ve driven with my phone mounted down the Denali highway in Alaska and my phone didn’t budge (one or the worst ‘roads’ is the US). Plus if you choose to get it with the option, you have 2 additional USB ports so charging cables aren’t all over the place. I also have to add it will block your clock which is ok with androids because you can set the time to be displayed on the lock screen but my dumb new iPhone won’t let me. Plus it’s very adjustable. Since that picture, I’ve moved my phone to the other side of the power button which is out of the way of the radio screen, all the buttons, my hands don’t hit anything while turning the steering wheel or hitting the windshield washers, and it’s no higher than my hood scoop.

No drilling into the dash, no adhesives to weaken in the summer heat, no magnets. Just a solid mechanical mounting solution. I've been using mine for probably year. This setup is rock solid. Doesn't block my vision of the road or the LCD screen. Blocks that one vent a little, but I don't miss it.
Based on this post, I just had all the pieces parts delivered and installed it a few minutes ago. This is an excellent, solid solution. It's not going to drop my phone and it all can be removed.

While pricey - to me at least, this really is the ultimate solution.

Hi.

I liked the Ram mount idea, but didn't like the X-grip because I often switch my phone from landscape to portrait. I used Ram mount and Arkon parts.

I just did the Proclip vent mount paired with a RAM Mount 2 x 1.7 inch ball base and X-Grip and this is the best combo ever. I didn't even bother with using the Proclip tape as the attachment is that secure. You'll see what I mean if you go for the vent mount. They also have a 10% coupon (10now) to make the choice a little easier.

I did try the RAM Mount near the top left of the radio dash like everyone else but I found that the steering wheel would block the bottom left of my phone view just a little. Using Google maps this would be the ETA and distance to location area which bothered me a bit.

I found the perfect solution. This mount is great. I originally ordered an aluminum mount from tackform that is designed for a motorcycle. It was really well made but the grip was just too tight for daily use in the 4Runner. I called the company and they were very helpful in finding a solution. This new mount is great. It’s adjustable and it’s very easy to insert and remove my phone from the mount with one hand. I also like the clean look of the mount. I’m pumped!

I tried an X-Grip, Pro-clip, and the aluminum tackform mount before figuring this out.

Objectives:

1. Operate with one hand, while arm is resting on the arm rest, and doesn't get in way of drink holder, or transmission or transfer gear levers.
2. modular: switch between a ram X mount, a cradle, and a tablet.
3. be stable, easy to remove, and require no drilling.

Cons:
1. expensive
2. lots of pieces

Pieces:
1. Ram Mount wedge: as name implies this is wedge between the dead space between seat and center console. This will not move once its wedged in place. Its easy to place, since its held by friction, but sturdy enough to mount a tablet if you wanted to. This is badass. I wish i got this a while back.
2. Ram mount double socket swivel arm: It allows more articulation of the cradle or x mount. Ideally, you want a long one.
3. Arkon 25mm to 17mm ball adaptor: you need this to be able to mount a akron cradle to a ram mount arm
4. Arkon/Mpow cradle: a cell phone cradle.
5. optional/not pictured: Ram Mount X cradle
6. Optional/not pictured: Ram mount tablet cradle.

Only thing that would worry me is that the phone could turn into a dangerous projectile if the bag goes off. Other than that I like the look.

I have an anker wireless charger/mount. Its a vent clip, but it has a neat cam system to clamp it. It also has little legs to keep it from drouping. Ive been off road a few times with it and its worked fine, but i dont do anything with rocks. Ram mount would definately hold better, but im impressed with how sturdy this is.

Fyi i hardwired it to a usb behind the dash.

Also not sure why pics are sideways
