I will put it in 4 low and see. It isn't as loud as 4 low on the previous vehicles I have had where I actually used 4 low.

Definitely not tire noise. I'd bet my Runner on that.
The sound in the video is different than this noise as well. I have both. Anything but the most sensitive mics couldn't pick this up.
Cabinetman, keep us updated on that next service appt. From the first time I heard it, I didn't associate it with the diffs. I don't know why. In my admittedly uneducated head I always felt it was related to the engine just the way it responded to throttle inputs.
I've only had one dealer try to listen for it and they said they couldn't hear it. I'd rather go to the dentist than try to convince a stubborn service adviser.
There is a foreign car shop in my city thats big on toyotas I've been to before that I may ask for help but they are so expensive.

Howl / howling / whining Annoyance
The sound is best described as taking a glass of water and running your finger over the rim several times.
The sound is coming from the rear differential, and you can hear it loudest between 65-70mph.
We have interfaced with 2 different Toyota dealer’s master mechanics. The first one told us to turn up the radio. The second one was because we escalated to headquarters (for obvious reasons mentioned) as headquarters referred us to the second.
On both test drives, with both dealerships, they compared our 2018 limited 4Runner with the same model on their lot. The other ones made the same howling noise from the rear differential. They documented it as a typical 4Runner characteristic.
We found this unacceptable.
The headquarter’s engineer was sent to investigate. Again, they test drove our 4Runner, to confirm noise. We got to the dealership and noticed there was some “chopping ” on the tires(only 17k on the tires), so they switched them out with new tires. The howling was still present.
The headquarter engineer test drove and confirmed another 4Runner(same model), has the same noise. They put both vehicles on the hoist and recording it howling at speeds between 65-70mph.
The engineer then told us, that we filed a lemon law complaint and there was nothing further they could to do until the lemon law complaint was investigated and complete. This is not true, as we did not fill out any paperwork on this. We only filed a complaint with Toyota headquarters (title: case manager Toyota customer experience)
One week later, we received a letter from Toyota’s Headquarters stating the howling noise coming from the rear differential, was a normal characteristic and there was nothing further they could do.
Toyota has a problem. They are aware of the problem, and they will do nothing to fix the problem until they get enough complaints or until a customer’s safety is compromised.
Currently, we have 22k on this vehicle and this noise is constant and a nuisance. Furthermore, once our lease is up, we will no longer do business with Toyota because of failure to provide customer service.
We would have be fine staying with Toyota if they would have compromised with us to fix the problem and/ or swap out with a like value Tundra, instead.

If this is the rear differential, do other models make the same noise?
Also, pardon my ignorance, but what specifically does a "howl" indicate, and what problem exists? Is this a presumed mechanical failure?
*Also, I honestly can't hear the noise in the video, and I don't hear anything in my truck, but I've also lost some high frequency hearing so maybe I'm unaware.

The noise is loudest when I'm just barely touching the pedal. If I give the 4Runner more gas or completely let off the throttle it goes away. My wife describes the noise as more of a howl and her ears are way better than mine.
I took the vehicle into the dealership and took a tech for a ride. He agreed the noise was there and kept the 4Runner to do some more investigating. The next day I was called to come pick it up as the noise was deemed normal. I was told the noise is just a normal part of the AWD system on the 4Runner Limited.
I have a hard time accepting this is a normal noise. I have owned a 2013 Land Cruiser, 2008 Lexus GX470 and a 2004 4Runner that all had full-time 4wd and I never noticed this noise in any of them. I now have almost 5k miles on the Limited and I'm getting sick of hearing the noise ever day.
Do any of you with a 5th Gen 4wd Limited have a noise like this? If so, did it go away after some mileage? I feel like the noise is rear differential related, which will never go away in my experience.
Any information you can provide is appreciated. I'm trying to get as much information as possible before I start escalating the matter with Toyota.

I bought a 2019 4Runner 2WD SR5 in June. It exhibits this whining noise exactly as described. I have not taken it to the dealer yet but will report what they say whenI do.
Has anyone gotten any resolution to this issue?

I have a trd pro and it has zero whine. Our 4th gen that is now my sons car has no whine. Even the old 3rd gen diff transfer case rear end has zero whine. My 08 Tundra had a whine coming from the rear diff but I changed all the fluids using Mobil 75w -90 and the noise went away.

Took mine in to the dealer a couple of weeks ago and went for a ride with a tech. He heard the whining noise and said he would drive another 4Runner on their lot and get back to me.
He did get back and asked me to bring it back in. I take it in tomorrow and will report back with what they find out, if anything.

Just dropped the 2019 4Runner at the dealer. Went for another ride with the tech to confirm the whining from rear diff. Looks like they are going to replace the differential. Hope that fixes it. 2750 miles.
I really like this 4Runner. I have a 1997 4Runner with 200K miles that has been a great car, though I did buy a 1992 Toyota pickup brand new, that threw a timing chain at 49000 miles. Just hoping this 4Runner doesn’t become a problem, because I got rid of a Honda CRV to buy this car when Honda couldn’t/wouldn’t fix the car that only had 35K miles on it.

Took my 19 4 Runner in today for the same whine/howl noise between 60 - 70 mph. Was told that there is a TSB to correct this issue. Replacement of the rear drive shaft and mounts are needed. Parts are on order will follow up when done.

2016 Limited 4WD and a 2004 SR5 V6 4WD
Regardless of the mode of operation, I have not noticed any sounds coming from my drive lines or center differential. Everything is pretty much silent as far as I can tell.

Damn my 2020 Off Road with 3000 miles makes the same exact whine between 60-70 when I’m pressing the gas and when I let go of the gas the whine goes away

I had the same noise on my 2014 SR5 2wd. around those speeds, if I lightly hit the throttle i could consistently make the noise. Went away if giving more gas or letting off completely. I always thought it sounded like some intake noise hitting a resonant tone or something. I do not have the same sound from my 2018 OR.

So...I took the 2019 4Runner 2WD in last week and they replaced the rear differential under warranty. I saw on the service printout that the parts and labor would be about $2200.
Still makes the EXACT same noise at exactly the same speeds !

My 2015 Limited sounds the same with 58,000 miles as the youtube video. yes this truck is louder than my previous 4runners. My 4th gen sport was super silent. I don't think it's a problem, just normal for this truck.
