I used to do this on my Maxima as I could swap it out without having to even put the car on jack stands. With the 4Runner's horrendous skid plate and filter housing, no way am I doing that this often. But with how plain the OEM filter is, I don't feel comfortable running all the way to 10k with it. I change everything at 8500 miles.

Going to give the Bosch 3981 a try. The end caps have a felt washer on them that will hopefully seal better. The black caps are not soft rubber unfortunately.

Why spend the cash , just wad up an old tshirt and stuff it into the canister .

Seriously though, just go with the Toyota part ! I doubt another manufacturer has put more into R&D than Toyota for it own vehicles.

During the early days of youtube, someone cut a Fram Oil filter open and went about the business of trashing that brand. This person was not an engineer , just another yahoo wagging his tongue. Many like him have since followed with their useless videos.

Millions read it and off it went. We live in a monkey-see/monkey-do world. People who have no first hand knowledge of the subject will holler "Fram Oil Filters Are Junk".

I have used countless Fram filters over a span of many years and have never lost and engine, nor had one sludge up. I am not endorsing Fram with this statement. Just saying that mob mentality rules the internet.

Use any filter and any brand of oil that meets owners manual specs as per that manuals OCI and your vehicles engine will live indefinitely, assuming other required maint. is carried out and you don't torture the vehicle.

List price for the Toyota filter is $5.41. Amazon sells them, many Walmarts even sell them for a buck or 2 more if you’re in a bind.
Go here and find your closest online dealer, order online for pickup and you can get them less than $4 in many cases.

I my self would hesitate using the OEM filter element from Toyota in the newer 4runners unless you plan on changing the oil after 7,500 max miles. I believe that these paper elements were not designed to last for the 10,000-mile oil intervals and could cause engine damage if used as instructed in the owner’s manual. The filter fitment guide shows that these paper elements are also used in the 2009 4runner which used conventional oil with recommended 5K oil and filter change. I do believe that this element is still being made the same way and has not been upgraded with synthetic fibers to be used in the new gen 4runners with 10K oil change schedules that are now using synthetic oils. If you want your 4runner to last buy one of the after market filters designed to be used with synthetic oils. Why would the manufacturer care what happens to you ride after the warranty runs out?

Been doing 10k oil changes with my 4runner using the OEM filter. Blackstones found the PPM of metals to be pretty good. Their universal averages for the 1GR-FE are based on 5k interval oil changes. I wouldn't worry too much about using the OEM filter.

I pretty much use Fram Extra Guard and I have the most miles (225K) of any 5th gen on this Forum.

I use the OEM on 4runner and change oil and filter (Mo1 or Valvoline 5/20) at 7500. I have used Fram on all other vehicles for 50 years, no issues. Mule has run a small block chevy filter and Dino 20/50 Pennzoil for 38 years with OC every 3000. WIX makes the best filters IMO.
