I used about 14 quarts on my Tacoma with the OEM external oil cooler.

I only needed about 4 quarts to do a simple pan drain and fill. I did not want to mess with the complicated procedure that is required to get the right amount back in when doing a full drain/flush. It's pretty involved to do it correctly.

It's not that bad. I feared screwing something up but I used my scangauge to read temp before opening the check plug.

For the purpose of setting correct ATF fluid level, you can also use a small paper clip. Documented in FSM. Toyota shows a "special tool" for this which is nothing more than a jumper wire which is what a paper clip is.
Works like a charm.

ATF Fluid capacity for many 5th Gen 4Rs is 11.3 qts.

Some extra may be needed for a "flush". More than one transmission tech claims the flushing method used by many DIY types actually inter-mixes old and new fluid during the process. I suppose if you spin enough new fluid through you'll eventually end up with fresh ATF.

Pointer to owners manuals follow if you need to determine your 4Rs ATF(and other) fluid capacity:

Owners Manuals/Warranty Info/Etc. 2010-2019

Oh right, I forgot about that. It's a jumper between pins 4 and 13 on the OBD-II port, correct? I will get one of the port readers as they are cheap on eBay.

The service manual excerpt states 1.8 qts for pain drain refill. I could have sworn I used nearly 4 quarts when I did ours but I have slept and drank since then.

You will drain 3 qts. if the system is cold and properly filled. You might drain more if you drain hot.
You can also get an extra qt. out if you elevate the front of the vehicle as high as you can get it with a floor jack.

I had it on jack stands at the front and it's always hot in Houston. Engine was probably cold though. I will work on the proper procedure soon. I accidentally drained a little ATF out disconnecting the cooler lines instead of the power steering lines the other day, damnit.
