I use the "Toyota" safe in my console. I still haven't come up with a good way to mount a holster in the thing though so that I can have the gun at arms reach without dicking around (provided it wasn't already on my belt of course).

Criminals like guns. Criminals know where you like to hide guns. Criminals like to smash, grab, and destroy to get at guns. Criminals are smart.

A console safe bolted securely to the vehicle is probably the only option if you absolutely need to leave your gun in the vehicle for periods of time. And it mostly deters crooks who don't have the luxury of time.

Yes, I usually put under the rear drivers seat never tried in front area, I’ve since taken it out cause it was blocking the vent that’s under the seat for the rear area.. it looks like this model is no longer available and hornady has gone to a cable style system..

Most mini lock boxes like this have a cable to loop around something like the seat rails, and still had enough slack to get into your lap for emergency use.

There are plenty of good and convenience tools out there to defeat this. I keep this in my off-road bag and its amazing what it can go though. Knipex mini bolt cutters. I can go though a chain link fence like butter.

I would consider most any of these solutions for temporary / short term storage at best. If someone really wants it, they are going to get it.
