Alternate Gun safe/storage ideas?
Hi all,
I’m looking for other options to store my firearm in my 4Runner. I know the console safe is a great option. It’s just not practical for me at this time. My firearm is with me 99% of the time. But every once in a while I have to leave it behind. I don’t want to rely on locking it in the glove box. There just isn’t a lot of room for other lockable storage options. Just seeing if anyone has any ideas or suggestions?

Subcompacts can fit under the center console lid with some ingenuity and hidden away for that quick access if you don't mind securing it.

There are so few places to hide anything in a T4R. It's a bummer.
Some of those Vaultex gun safes could probably fit under the seat or be attached via cable lock to a secure spot. I have a small one at my bedside and it's great.
Gunvault makes the biometric Microvault that is the perfect size for under the seat. I'm sure there are other similar models from other companies.
The only other place [for some] is in the compartment behind the sliding tray. I might see if one can be mounted there. It would be nice to have some backcountry protection.

This was my first thought as well, since you don't want a console vault, get a small gunvault that will bolt to the seat rails and will store under the seat.

I have the Lock'er Down console safe and love it, but they do have some other options. I met them in person in San Antonio and they are very nice so if you want some other options call them.

I too was looking at this option until I saw a YouTube vid where someone apparently smacked the lock off without a large time invested. They look nice and fit nice, but not sure they are a deterrent from the folks that like to take things from your vehicle without benefit of your permission. Probably would keep the random theft from occurring thou.
Don’t have a link, but you can likely find it.

SnapSafe storage boxes are useful for temporary storage and/or transport. Amazon often has them for around $20 (when on sale).

I have the sliding rear cargo deck and has a compartment that could fit a rifle. Not a bad spot to put when your wanting to lock it up.

Not my video, but I also was looking into the Lock'er Down safes until I found the Toyota safe which has a much larger and firmer locking mechanism

I have the OEM safe and love it it have a dial combo and key lock. It works great for me. It couldn’t get more solid I use magnets to keep my truck gun and 2 spare mags in place.

I saw that YouTube video, that was not a Lock'er Down. When I was talking to them they said several of their customers had breakins and none were able to get into the safe. I am sure if your vehicle is stolen they would eventually find a way into it, but for a common hit and run Lock'er Down is a good option.
The one sold as OEM from Toyota is actually made by a company for them and I chose not to go with that one because it only had a 3 digit lock. Mine is up to 16 digits.

Curious what magnets you use?

Another option to hide a pistol for a short time if you can’t carry it into a place your going is in the rear driver side spot where your jack is located I’ve stored mine in that place when going to the hospital for appointments... I definitely want a console safe though i also will use the hornady lock box like this one mounted to seat rails.

How does that work? Just sits on the floor?

Vaultek LifePod fits under the driver's seat. It partially sits on top of the floor duct but not a big deal. Can be secured to the seat rail w/ optional tether. Works for me.
