Question about air down.

Hi guys, I just wanted to ask your advice. We will be going on a fishing trip late May and we will be doing around one hour and a half at least of forest road.

What tire pressure you guys recommend we should air down to ?

20 PSI is a conservative number.
I air down between 20-15 depending on the terrain.

@calcrc the sweet spot will depend on the terrain, your tires, and how fast you want to go, but I usually drop down to 20 or so as a starting point. Have fun!

I typically air down to 15 in most cases, and further to 10 in special cases (deep or icy packed snow).

It depends on the tire, but the lower you go, the slower you should go. Speed creates more heat and friction in the make up of the tire and can compromise the integrity of them.

you shouldn't have any issues on the forest road running regular tire pressure..if you were going to be in soft sand or conditions where a lot of tire patch is necessary I wouldn't hesitate to go as low as 15..I run down to 12 on my off-road rig.

true, but that long on a gravel road, running aired down is usually a nicer ride.


id think 20 would be a good number.

Either way I'd save the time of airing up and down on forest roads and spend it catching fish

I won't do any less than 15 lbs since I don't have beadlocks. On that road you are talking about, yea probably 20 to 25.

And on another note, Stauns deflators are amazing. More expensive than the cheap ones on Amazon, but I think the quality will keep these working for a long time. Screw them on each wheel and wait until they stop, easy as that. I think they are supposed to be factory set to 18 lbs, mine stopped at 15 which was fine. You can adjust them to any setting you want. I got the standard duty 6-30.

I have staun deflators set at 18 and since I"m lazy, thats the number i deflate to regardless of where I go.

I do 15 for soft sand and 18 to 20 for trails. Sofens the ride, easier on ball joints, wheel bearings and you.

I've gone to 8-10psi for years in the sand, I am carefull about not pulling the bead off the rim and I wasn't easy on the throttle either. For hard pack, it depends on the tire. I'd say start 15psi or when the tire visually starts to bulge out.

On a gravel FS road just drop your pressure a little, reducing 5psi should make the ride comfortable

What is the condition of the forest road? If it's anything like ours here in AZ, I wouldn't air down at all. Waste of time and effort on a well maintained, flat, relatively smooth dirt/gravel road. Also, if you do air down, do you have a way to air up before you travel distance on hardball road or is there a gas station near the end of the forest road?
