I use Valvoline Maxlife ATF, couple times a year I suction the reservoir dry and refill with it. What I take out usually still looks pretty good, but still an easy way to keep the PS system in good shape.
Whatever you use, make sure its compatible with your vehicle. I used my "normal" power steering fluid in my Honda Accord and I was changing a power steering pump within 6 months. Honda has a specific fluid that is not compatible with all other fluids. Toyota may also.
Over the last 40 yrs.(approx.) - I've used both the recommended Dex-III and plane jane power steering fluid in different Toyota's. The results were the same. Either will work.
Many dealers these days use power steering fluid; there may be some who use Dex-III.

I would only use the recommended Dexron II compatible fluid.
