GoPro or DSLR?

Going on a cross country trip, plus the trail riding..I would like to have some video just to reminisce on my trips! What have y'all used?

I've purchased the Expedition Essentials mount for my CB, tablet, phone, etc. and was curious if anyone has used a DSLR instead of a GoPro as a "trail cam?"

I can get a used Sony a5100 for $300 or decent used or new GoPro for $200. Which would y'all do? Looking for recommendations and pictures from other people's setups!

Thanks!

This thread should probably be in a different forum since it's not 5th Gen specific.

Pretty hard to compare these two as it's hard for two cameras to be more different from each other.

First terminology: the A5100 is not a DSLR. It's a "mirrorless" camera. It's significantly heavier than the go pro but has an image sensor (APS-C) that is many times the size of the GoPro's sensor. This will give better image quality in low light, but also in low light it will have a much shallower depth of field which can be a problem unless you're specifically looking for shallow depth of field effects. The A5100 will be a MUCH better still camera than the GoPro, but GoPro's do produce excellent video results. The A5100 can get good video as well, but is limited to 30 minutes of recording time per segment.

The GoPro will do 4K video at 60 or 120 frames per second and 1080P at 240 fps for doing slow-mo work. The best the A5100 will do is 1080P at 60fps. No 4K.

Probably the biggest difference will be in ease of use. A GoPro has very few options and is REALLY good if you're looking to just hit the record button and forget about it. OTOH the A5100 gives you about a million options and generally will require more fiddling for satisfactory results.

Do you have any interest in using the camera as a helmet cam or a body mount cam? For that the GoPro is what you want.

If you get the A5100 make sure you get a lens with built-in stabilization or the video from your trcuk will be shaky.

So what do you want to get? Are you looking to take up photography as a hobby with an interchangeable lens still camera that also does video? Or do you just want a simple recording device to put on the dash?

I have both - well, not an A5100 but a couple of Panasonic m43 mirrorless cameras that are similar as well as a bunch of lenses. Photography has been a long time hobby of mine and I really like to use all of the creative controls available. Using these I can produce serious pro results but it takes a fair amount of paying attention. For skiing, the beach, etc. I have a GoPro that's brilliant. I just choose the recording mode (I usually just shoot 1080P at 60FPS) and hit the red button and get great results. The GoPro is also nearly indestructible and with the optional housing basically is. I can drop it, submerse it, get it super sandy, get it super snowy, whatever. It once got stripped right off my helmet by a branch while skiing the trees and sat in the snow for two weeks until a friend of mine miraculously came across it one day. It wasn't hurt at all! My m43's won't do any of that. Dropping it will certainly kill it, getting it sandy might. Getting water in the wrong place can kill it and submerging it certainly will.

I have a GoPro mount in my front grill and one on the cross bars on top. I use the GoPro phone app for remote control. The larger battery pack is needed.

I shoot stills, time delay shots and video. The GoPro quality is surprising with the small fixed lens.

Thanks for the awesome write up! I really appreciate it. Would you recommend the GoPro over the Mirrorless Camera. Sorry for my misuse of terminology. What about the Go Pro Hero Session? Thanks!

GoPros are action cameras meant to be mounted on yourself or something like a vehicle exterior. Mirrorless cameras are more for high resolution photos but would never put up the abuse of being mounted on the exterior of a vehicle. What are you trying to do with the camera?

@moshie this is the ultimate question.

I've had the Sony 5100 as well as a Garmin VIRB that is Garmin's version of a GoPro. Both can do cool things, but they are just different devices. I wouldn't want my Sony mirrorless camera on a rigid attachment mounted on a vehicle for a long time (under no circumstances on the outside of it).

The GoPro will probably give you video that is better stabilized. I'd expect picture quality to be similar. The Sony has a record button right on the outside of the body, so you don't have to go through a bunch of menus to get to the record function.

Even with kit lenses, the 5100 can take very good photos. I've had 20x30 prints come out nice and crisp. It is also very portable, and a great deal with a kit lens at $300. If you want to take photographs and don't care as much about the video, I'd say go with that. If you want a video camera that will attach to your vehicle and you plan on taking trail/driving videos often with a few snapshots in between, get the GoPro. The GoPro can take good pictures too, I've seen it done. If you are interested in photography and want to get going, the Sony is a great place to start. You can also use Sony e-lenses for both the crop sensor 5100 you're considering as well as the full frame 7 series models if you ever decide to upgrade. Sounds like you want a full time, fixed mount video option, so the GoPro is probably best for that purpose IMHO.

If you do go the GoPro route I wouldn't mess with the Session, the inability to swap out batteries after use is the downfall of the Session, so basically you'd use the camera, run it dead, then need to do a full recharge before being able to use again. I have something like 6 spare batteries that I charge/swap as I go on my Hero 5 and Hero 6.

I have both GoPros and the A5100, basically you'll need to decide what you want out of your chosen device.

If you want mainly video in a rugged package that give you decent photo options get the GoPro, the Hero 5 is good, the Hero 6 has decent stabilization, the Hero 7, though I've never messed with one, is supposed to be great, almost gimbal good from what I hear.

If you want mainly photos with option to video(no stabilization or hard mounting) then get the A5100.

Only thing I have to add is that I own a couple a mirrorless camera with quality glass as I do a lot of photography. That camera also has video capabilities.

I also have a new GoPro Here 7 Black.

I use both or either depending on what I am trying to do. If I was not wanting to do landscape photography for large print, didn't want to do photo editing, and just wanted a simple quick easy way to document my trip I'd run the GoPro. The stabilization is insane. Audio is much improved from generations past and unless you want to run external mics on either, the GoPro probably beats the mirrorless. Still photos are pretty good. But overall, simplicity is great.

I mounted an a5100 on my dash for a road trip and got great photos. The biggest issue is readjusting the camera as I was using a 67design mount(mostly jeep specific but pretty much a RAM mount). I also used a gopro which I never had to adjust. I'd use the 5100 for outside the vehicle shots and gopro for in/on vehicle shots.

My .02 - I'm not a huge gopro fan. I have an older model. Haven't used it in quite a while. The video simply isn't as good as a typical cell phone. I have half a dozen old cell phones that all take better video/pics. I'd just use one of them. And you have a billion apps for any sort of photography or video you want to do. Most of them are waterproof too.

For bright daylight and wide angle - modern cell phone cameras are very good. They're nearly on par with most DSLR or mirrorless cameras.

I use a Canon mirrorless for most everything else. The one advantage of Canon is the wide selection of other lenses. The native format is pretty limited though. I had a Panasonic m4/3 before and it was also pretty good. IMO the canon produces better images across the board. But it's kinda behind the times for video. I'd guess Sony makes the best mirrorless right now. The great option for the Canon is that I can use things like a 50mm portrait lens I already have. My 10-18mm wide angle is WAY cheaper than a comparable lens for the Sony. Just a few examples. And for future travel to somewhere like Africa - it's usually cheaper to rent the big telephotos for Canon than any other platform. It's not better. Just cheaper.

And, just to throw another wrench in the decision, some mid level point and shoot cameras do a fantastic job of all around photography that is a step up from a cell phone. And a good bit cheaper than buying a mirrorless camera and lenses. Plus a lot smaller to travel with. That's the killer of any interchangeable lens camera system. The bodies are smaller and so are the native lenses. But they're still really bulky compared to a point and shoot camera or a cell phone.

So... I guess my suggestion is to first ask yourself whether you need something a cell phone can't do. If it's just something you don't want to do with your current phone - I think you could buy a Samsung S7 or S8 for around $100. And they should take better video than a Gopro in my experience. Just get the mounting you want to use them for what you want to do. If you need more zoom - I'd consider whether you'll really want to invest in telephoto lenses and how much they cost for the camera system you're interested in. Or whether a point and shoot camera with a decent telephoto would be better for size and weight. In the end - make sure you get something you'll actually use. Lots of $$ cameras sit on shelves because they're not convenient to take or use.

Canon M100 with the kit lens for $350ish is pretty hard to beat for all around photos. If you want to expand later, the 22mm prime lens and the 200mm tele it covers everything my cell phone doesn't. And that set fits in a small travel bag. That's my person go-to for 90%. The other camera I use regularly is a Canon S100 with a dive housing for water sports trip. It takes fantastic images and video. And I'd bet you could find a used one for around $100 or less on Ebay.

good luck.

Video action camera or dash cam

I've looked at doing this recently.
Read the reviews for the GoPro action cams. The cameras supposedly overheat during prolonged use, among other issues. There are several better action video cams than the GoPro line for the same or less cost. The Sony FDR-X3000 Action Camera or the Olympus Stylus Tough TG-Tracker Action Camera or the Nikon KeyMission 170 4K Action Camera are all better models. My favorite would be the Sony.
A simple dash cam is another option and it provides constant video for all driving, including for use as video evidence in case of an accident. But you have to save the file or change out the microSD cards or it will over-write your off-road files while you continue to drive down the highway.
The hard part about using a DSLR camera is making a practical dash mount tripod using just the 1/4" tripod screw and a tripod head. There are some tabletop and platform tripods that might work. A steady-cam grip might work. I considered doing this with my big, heavy, full frame Nikon D800E but the dash mount is not easy to create or practical. Image Stabilization (IS) does not come on many of the wide angle lenses you'd want to use on a DSLR. Some of the mirrorless cameras come with IS in the camera body so it's applied to any lens you have on the camera.

I'd just like to point out what a lot of folks are overlooking. The GoPro Hero 7 Black is a different beast than GoPro cameras of the past.

For the $300 it cost to get a brand new one right now it is hard to beat. For super convenience your cell phone will work great for pics and vids but again, I have a couple Samsung Note phones and while I use the camera on them with great results, there are times the GoPro Hero 7 Black does better.

Session takes great video but as mentioned depending on your usage the lack of exchangeable batteries might be an issue. On the dash you could just keep it plugged in.

I think everything else has been mentioned. I was going to say a couple of things about mirrorless....but if you go to dpreview.com you can find millions (literally!) of posts on the subject.

GoPro video suffering compared to an old cell phone is certainly a new one on me. My phone (S9) captures decent video, but compared to a new-ish GoPro?!? Maaaannnn......I just don't see that at all! In bright light my Hero5 Session rivals my G9 (and better slo-mo) and blows my phone completely away!

We haven't learned any more about your desires, but if you're looking for an easy to use dash cam I'd definitely recommend a GoPro.

Smile THANK YOU! More Help.

Thank you so much for the comments…I went trail riding yesterday, picked up BudBuilt Rock Sliders and was thinking about what my desires are - sorry it took me so long for the response!

I am looking for a camera that will document my road/trail travels along with doing some light photography. Definitely not even an amateur photographer. Just looking for something to document my travels. I am already keeping a travel journal for all my fun things.

Taking all of the comments into consideration: mirrorless camera, DSLR, GoPro, and Dash Cam -

1. The mirrorless/DSLR camera will be great for taking pictures but not video because you have to keep resetting the function and the stabilization, not something I’m looking forward to doing because I will hopefully be distracted in taking in views.
2. The dash cam I just don’t care for using. No reason really against other than not being able to take out.
3. The Go Pro seems like the best option.

Now I need help with choosing! How many would you recommend getting? I’m mounting one inside the cabin on a dash mount. Do y’all recommend a back view or side views?

Y’ALL ARE SERIOUSLY THE BEST! THANK YOU!

The Sony has a dedicated video record button so you don't have to change functions via menu but yeah, it does sound like a GoPro/similar is better suited for your wants. I don't have enough experience with GoPros to recommend a model, but follow up on what @TwistedJake posted, the quality of some of the newer models is night and day different from what the older stuff produced. Sounds like the GoPro Hero 7 Black is worth checking out.
