5th gen rattling, front end!!
Hi All,
A few weeks ago, after i came back from a mammoth trip, i started hearing a rattling noise from what sounded like the front end, suspension area. I would only hear it from 3-5mph, and as i coast at idle without brakes applied ( like in a parking lot for example). I’ve search the internet and seen some ideas. One of which was to check the brake pads. Sometimes, the brake pads can become loose and rattle at lower speeds when not applies. The best way to describe the sound is: Hollw metallic rattle or rumble. My truck only has 12k miles. But I checked the pads anyway. All the pins that hold the pads in place looked good. I even added a touch of Brake Quiet to the back of each brake pad, hoping it would silence any vibration. After letting it dry for an hour, I put everything back together and took it for a test drive. NO CHANGE!!! Damn it!!
I was under my truck for an hour, looking at every heat shield and making sure that everything bolted looked secure. Everything looked good.
SOLUTION FOUND! I have a gobi stealth roof rack. I have a full length light bar. Apparently I didn’t tighten them down enough. With off roading and driving, it shifted rearward. The back of the light bar was a hair away from a crossbar of many roof rack. As i slowed down, and the engine goes to idle, there’s a slight vibration from the motor. This is normal, however, it was just enough vibration to rattle the light bar against the roof rack. This would describe the low speed rattle. as i sped up or was dead stop, there was no noise.
I readjusted the light bar, and boom! Problem solved.
CHECK YOUR LIGHTBAR!
Hope this was helpful
