I think that was a 4th Gen.

Mine is stuck on 24/7 for now. If someone figures it out on a 5th I'm all ears.

I think this is the on you talking about.

Pretty sure I came across both gen4 and gen5 methods on this forum.

On the 4th gen it's just disconnecting a cable, then jumpering 2 pins.

On the 5th gen it's just jumpering 2 wires on a connector, but you leave it connected.

TPMS is great for people who don't pay attention to their car's status or maintenance needs. To everyone else it's an annoyance, especially those of us who air down occasionally.

My car is a Porsche. One of the most reliable and easy to DIY maintain vehicles I've ever owned.

Toyota is behind the times on a lot of electronics IMO.

Yep, VAG did that until they went to the indirect method.

The "behind the times" is a bit of a mixed bag.

Clearly, Toyota has the capability of keeping up with the Europeans on electronics, but they also look at the maintenance nightmares that can ensue.

In Germany, ADAC (the German equivalent of AAA) rates reliability on breakdowns and the German brands (that have a poor reliability record in the US) have a far superior reliability record than Toyota/Honda/Mazda/Subaru.

The only thing that I can figure is that it comes down to maintenance and competence of the techs. Every Toyota/Honda dealership I've seen in Germany has been tiny and run down - maybe because sell so few.

In the mid-eighties I was living in Heidelberg. There was a short time period that the $ to DM exchange rate went sky high so it was a great time to buy a car. We always wanted a Jaguar so I went to the local dealer to see what they had.

I was the first private person to buy a car at the dealership. He was a factory authorized tuner so he had a bunch of cool cars. One was a month old XJ-V12HE with a brand new engine. He had sold the car as a company car and just bought it back very cheaply, realized he couldn't sell it as a company car so was selling it on fire sale.

I ended up buying it and it turned out to be the most reliable Jag ever - the only problems I encountered were the typical Jag tank switch that went bad a frozen handbrake.

So, why am I saying this and why did the car have a new engine?

The prior owner had an oil pressure light come on that he resolved with a carefully placed small piece of electrical tape.

I actually ended up buying a XJS-V12 as well.

I asked because the threads I've followed have been inconclusive or simply cover with tape.

I grew up without it. TPMS is a pretty good system, not sure I agree with your blanket statement, no matter we all have opinions. Get debris/nail/screw in the freeway on a long drive, loose pressure, see it before you feel it *shrug* I dunno I think that there are other features far more nanny than that.

I air down all the time, as well as monitor the PSI, I like knowing where it is at, regardless if I am filling, driving aired up or down.

So true and this is where it can help every driver.

One of the most common tire issues is a slow leak. You pick up a nail and it (mostly) plugs the hole but will deflate in a couple of hours or over night. With modern tires, you can't tell by a visual inspection if a tire is low - you need to check it.

I'm not sure how she does it, but over the last couple of years she's picked up three nails. In each case (we check tire pressure monthly at the same time that we give our dog her heartworm and flea meds.) we found the leak in the AM as my wife was going to work and the TPMS alerted by the time she got to the bottom of the driveway.

In each case, the TPMS saved the tire. Had she driven on the tire longer then the tire would have been damaged beyond repair.

Hey, that was me. I cannot take credit as I found the how to somewhere in the depths of this forum.

Just disable it all together. I’m now running rubber valve stems also.

Made this jumper wire

Jumped these two wires together. They are 5 & 6 on the tpms sensors module. (Light green and dark green. Right next to each other behind driver dash panel.)

Light is forever gone.

Audis went to indirect, but Porsche has kept individual pressure sensors.

Not sure what VW's use...

Agree with your maintenance comments. Mixed bag for sure.
