babston's TRD Off-Road Build Thread

I recently sold my 4th Gen 4Runner V8 for this 2018 TRD Off-Road Premium with the Predator XP package. I have plans for several mods and will use this thread to list them as I get them completed.

Weathertech floor liners

This one was a must have and a no brainer. With all the areas I will be in and around factory carpet matts were not going to cut it.

Here is the link on Amazon:
Weathertech 444931-442862 FloorLiner

LED time.. Inside and out

So the factory lights are bad.. Everyone knows it and not sure why Toyota still uses them. So I went with some Auxbeam from Amazon. The 9005s lights are here and the H11 are here.

I tried a new interior style bulb.. So far they are working great. Of course they came from Amazon.

Then on the head lights and fogs I went with AUXbeam.. I have used them on several cars and they have been great.

BEFORE:

AFTER:

Since DRLs are using the high beams this caused some flickering issues. I added the PWM Interface Module from Headlight Revolution.

Center console storage tray

This was another nice to have. The big open hole for a console just was not working.

Guessed right again.. went to Amazon and picked it up.

RAM mount phone holder

This was another that I really needed. Having it sit down low in a cup holder was not working out. I like to use for maps, music etc and looking down was not safe at all.

I ran across this post on how it was done and was very easy to do.. 10-15 mins tops.

I got all the items from Amazon and Lowes for the bolt and washers (2x)
1x Ball
1x X-Grip
1x Short Arm

I tried 2 different sets of Weathertech laser cut precision mats on my 2018..Both sets the passenger side is about 2 inches from being flush right near the door.

I gave up on them because lately it seems their quality is suffering (curling up) on my sisters car and my moms car. I had a set in my 2008 Tacoma and not one problem with curling in the 8 years I had them.

Yeah. I guess time will tell. I had Husky liner in my 4th gen and they were loose and floppy. But so far they are really nice.

Right where the mat starts crawling up the side is where it started veering off path,by the time it got to the end after the bend,it was separated about 2".

Yours isn't as bad as the 2 sets I tried, when I say i tried them I picked them up at the dealer as special order and put them on in the parking lot and promptly returned them.

You should pull the bumper covers off and paint them, that's why I did instead of spending $400 on factory TRD Pro black ones.$5.00 vs $400 lol

So what liners are you using now?

On the bumper covers.. the plan on the front will be cutting it off to fit the bumper. On the back I have mixed feelings. I would like to paint/plasti-dip or something but want to make sure it will hold up since it will be in a place where things are going to hit it. Or from what I am seeing around online the back cover is like $140.. At this point I don't have any plans or budget for a new rear bumper so I need to do something.

How has yours been holding up? Pictures?

Carista - Bluetooth setting changes

So I ran across this the other day.. Carista is an app in iOS and Android that will let you connect to your existing OBII bluetooth adapter or you can buy theirs and this allows you to go into your cars settings and make changes. So it is more than a scanner tool. So you can go in and setup your 4runner to roll the windows down via the factory remote using the unlock button, change the seat belt dings, lock chirps etc.. Very nice. So you can get the adapter from Amazon and if you buy their adapter you get to use the app for a month for free and then you have to pay yearly for it. You can also just get the app if you have a bluetooth adapter already. Then you can pay for using the app for a week or by the year. It doesn't require you to have it connected forever to keep the settings changes. So I decided to buy the app for a week and make all my changes and be done. Works great. You can continue to use it for scanner codes after the week runs out, but you will not be able to make any new settings changes unless you buy it again.

I have heard you can get these done at the dealer but it is hit or miss if they are going to charge you and if they can do all the things you ask for. Technically they can do it all but if you dealer knows how is another story.

Below are some screen shots of the options on my 4Runner and the changes I made.

Video of the windows being rolled down via the remote

Video of the windows being rolled up and down from the key in the door

Frontrunner 3/4 roof rack

So we knew we were going to be getting a RTT and wanted to find a rack that will be good for the tent and also modular for everyday use as well. I really like the full rack from Frontrunner but was not looking forward to putting in the ribnuts in the roof channels. I think it would be fine but just the idea of doing this to my new ride weighed on me. Also having a sunroof the full rack would greatly cover the view and effect the wind and noise with it open. So I decided to go with the 3/4 rack after talking with them and finding out like most things if I decided later I could throw more money at it and get the extended side rails, hardware and 2-3 more slats and I could then transform mine into a full rack. Goes back to Frontrunner being very modular.

So after some shipping issues it finally came in. I didn't have to wait or have a lead time on it. The install went fairly easy... or so I thought. The ratcheting wrenches that I have would not fit between the bolt head and the rails so that was very slow going. I started all the nuts and bolts and left them loose so I could adjust and center the rack.. This is where it got sideways fast. Up to this point it took about 20-30 mins to put the upper rack together and about 30 mins to remove the factory rails and add the Frontrunner rails. When I had the top rack on the rails I was not able to center it very easily. The bolt mounts from the top rack would slide back and forth to allow the centering but with just a single hole just the size to all the bolt in the lower rails was a bad design. If the rails had more of an oval or slot design it would relax the way it has to be put on and would allow for easy adjustments. That part took a better part of an hour to install. I had to remove it several times to get it centered and aligned correctly. Maybe they did it this was for more rigidity. But this was very frustrating and added a lot of time to the install. Still with this issue on the install it is a very very nice rack and would highly recommend it.

CVT Roof Top Tent

So a few weeks ago CVT was running a special on all tents and items.. 25% off. So we packed up the family and had a road trip to Chattanooga TN to check out their show room and see then tents in person. Man... The quality and design of these tents are outstanding. We decided on the Mt. Rainer Extended Summit series. It is a 3+ person tent and all their tents comes with the lower annex included which will hold two 6' cots. I didn't have the roof rack installed yet so we just took up a trailer to bring it back with. It was very heavy with all the extras in the box. It was 270lbs. After taking the annex, annex floor, and tool kit the weight was down to 207lbs.. Still heavy but manageable.

Before mounting the Frontrunner rack I laid out the tent mounts.. Man this made the install so much easier than doing it on the 4Runner with 207lbs to move around. I opt'ed in for the standard RTT mount from FrontRunner.. So far so good. It was a bit of a pain to get the 13mm nut on there but will do it with an air ratchet next time and I would think it would be a lot better. The tent was so close to the rack it was hard to get my arm in there to tighten it up.

We decided to take it to a local state park. Wind Creek. It was close and gave us a chance to try it out with the family before getting off the beaten path. We were able to have my wife and I and also my son on the roof and my daughter opt'ed in for the single cot in the annex. I forgot the other at my hunt club. Over all it was great. Slept really nice and the weather was perfect.

I was really torn on the color options. We really like the forest green and tan but it didn't come in the model we wanted. We decided on the lighter grey and black rain fly.. Glad we did. It looks great on the 4Runner.

RAM mounted magnet over the X-Gip

So i really like how solid the Ram mounts are. I like the X-Grip because it will hold your phone there and not shake while driving on or off the trail. The one thing I dislike about it is the fact it takes two hands to get it an out. I found myself not using on short trips to work etc because of "the hassle" of putting in the mount.. Sad right!! Well i was looking on Amazon and found a magnetic base mount with a 1" ball. So i decided to try it. (MagWheels Magnetic Camera Mount + RAM Ball w/Non-Slip Anti-Scratch Rubber Coating for All Cameras)

I already have the metal base plate on just about all the phones in the family since we have SCOSCHE mounts in the other cars. WOW. This new mount is very very strong and I do not see it moving or falling off in any trail conditions. I am able to put it on and take it off with one hand and can put it in any rotation without having to loosen the Ram mount. This was something I was not able to do with the X-Grip. Another plus it is just black with no logos or eye catching colors.. It just disappears into the dash.
