Brake or Clutch odor
I live on a hill and sometimes after getting home I notice a slight odor that smells like brake or clutch overheating. I don't brake coming up the hill.
Yesterday I rented a small tractor with trailer about 4,000 lbs. Brought it home and the odor was very strong.
Hoping it's the catalytic converters getting hot. My T4 does not usually work that hard.
Any ideas what it may be?

Trailer had surge brakes, used T4 brakes very little on flat ground and driveway.
It looked almost level, very little nose high in the equipment yard. Air bags were at 35.
It was parked on an incline part of the driveway and looks bad.

Well, one thing's for sure: it's not your clutch.

My guess is you could have a brake dragging on the trailer.

The loader that your hauling is on the trailer incorrectly. The machine needs to be over the trailer axles. That will take the load off of your hitch.

Sometimes I get a faint smell that seems like rear brakes but that is after just my normal commute to work and no hard breaking or anything. I decided it was a bit of grease flinging off from the propeller shaft and burning off on exhaust.
Maybe your heavy load and tongue weight put a different drive line on the shaft and caused grease to fling??

How about the emergency brake? Perhaps not pushed down all the way, but just a few clicks? It could be dragging a bit.

After viewing the photo.
When I returned it, I stopped it farther back.

Perhaps its the mystery burning rubber smell. There's quite a few threads about it.
Basically a burning smell coming from rear wheel. Mine did it over the first year or so, randomly. Lots of folks have reported the same.
I dont think there was ever a conclusion as to what/why it happens.

I grew up on a mountain, and every car I've owned, including my 4runner, smells "hot" when I get to the top. I have no idea what causes it, but it doesn't seem to have done any damage!

Probably a bit over weight. I use to own a similar trailer and it was around 2,200 pounds empty. I've been looking at renting a Dingo like that one and they are around 2,900 pounds without attachments. I see the bucket on the front of the trailer and it looks like something else attached to it. If I had to guess, the trailer with equipment is sitting at 6k at least.
