under spare rotopax?

I was going to ask the Forum "anyone mount a rotopax under the spare tire". For those times I want to go somewhere, not put on my roof rack cause I can put everything inside, and just have that feeling of "yah, I'm covered in case I forget I'm low on gas".

Then I remembered I have a Master's Degree in Googling and found this:

https://www.amazon.com/Rotopax-Spare...01716043&psc=1

Anyone use one of these and will it work for the 4runner?

I'm thinking that's a little too close to the ground for me. It may work...

I think (I hope) this is for mounting it on the outside of a spare tire that is not under the vehicle.

Edit: Just saw the pic. Seems pretty dangerous without a skid plate. I like this idea better.

I just fill my spare tire up with gasoline. It's kinda slow to get it out through the valve stem though.

Seriously - I don't think rotopax hold enough to be worth the bother. There's not really a great solution in a 4Runner for auxiliary fuel other than a full retrofit of a Prado 150 extended range dual tank or a custom tank. There are soft sided fuel bladders that could work inside the wheel's back space area to hold a couple gallons. But they're kinda like the rotopax in the sense of a lot of $ for very little extra fuel. And potentially dangerous in a rear end collision.

this looks like a great way for a rock to puncture your tank and spill gas all over your hot exhaust

Reminds me of the exploding Jeep Grand Cherokees and exploding Pintos.

I don't mind the Rotopax in the spare area if you have your spare on a bumper carrier, it's recessed enough up in there to not be of concern. I keep mine on the roof rack when needed which isn't very often. To those who say four extra gallons isn't worth carrying I laugh in your face, since when is an extra 60 miles or more not worth having as a reserve? Get out of here with that nonsense.

Supposedly LRA is set to release an auxiliary fuel tank for the 5th Gen but if you think $100 for a gas can is a lot I doubt you'll be interested in 12-24 extra gallons at $1300+.

Looks like a really bad idea.

Carrying extra fuel can easily be made unnecessary with proper mods control and trip planning. That's for trail running with 1-2 nights off pavement.

If you want to spend a week camping in the Arizona Strip/Death Valley/Maze District or similar areas while driving left and right without touching pavement, then, yes, you do need a solution. But not an exploding one!

For me, getting out and then back in while exploring more roads and trails in the process is fun but others do prefer to avoid that, true.
