Has anyone done a 2wd Low Mod?

Has anyone modified their A.D.D. system to do 2 Low on a 5th gen. I searched but haven't found a thread on anyone actually doing it.

Tacoma guys and 3rd gen 4runner guys have been doing it a while. Haven't seen anything for 5th gens

I had the same thought. What would be the point?

Its very handy for trail riding in places like Moab. There is so much grip you get a lot of binding and steering feedback in 4wd. 2wd high strains the transmission too much plus then you have to stop and get it in/out of low range.
With 2wd low you can crawl over most items without overheating your transmission. Whenever needed you can kick in 4wd to get over tough obstacles.
This is a popular mod with 1st gen Tacoma guys. I've had it on a jeep TJ, on the jeep you modify the transfer case to do it. Toyotas are a simple matter of turning on and off the front diff.

Good explanation— I couldn’t figure out why it would be useful either, but your description makes perfect sense.

From time to time I find myself making 10-point turns in the thick woods, and this would be perfect for that

Problem now is you have to get the ADD splines to line up and that doesn't always happen. I once got my Tacoma stuck in snow and couldn't shift into 4wd because I couldn't move forward or backwards. ALSD got me out but only after did it lock into 4wd. Now I just make sure I'm in 4wd before I need it.

I'd just monitor tranny temps in 2wd high or keep it in 4wd low. The drivetrain is fine.

Kinda sounds to me like a solution in search of a problem.

I wish the 5th gen had a feature my 4th gen had. I could run in Lo with the center dif unlocked on the 4th gen. It had all the benefits of Lo without the binding. I seldom had to lock the center dif. If I was smarter I could probably figure out how to do this on my Limited with the center dif. From the factory my only option is lo with the center dif locked.

I use 2Lo locked in my Mule all the time and once did a entire TDS in 2 wheel when the Kid forgot to lock the front hubs and didn't know until 6 hours later at the Highway airing up to go home! I would try it on the 4Runner but I do wonder about not spreading the load over 4 wheels with the weight and torque increase on just the rear axle shafts that a 4Runner has.
