2019 Radios
Are they really that bad? Buying a 2019 next week and that seems to be the only negative I've seen. Salesperson stated you can still play music from your phone, take calls, get messages and the maps update via cell towers so besides the size and not having Apple Car Play what is the drawback?

Here are my issues with the Non JBL system:
Midbass cranked so it sounds powerful but it's quickly rolled off when you go up in volume.
No lows (must be Bose ).
The dash speakers are barely there.
For iPhones, the headunit always selects the first song in alphabetical order to play. You can avoid this by opening Apple Music first.
I swapped out for the Pioneer unit that was in my Tacoma.

If you're plugging in your phone it will likely select the first song, but I connect via bluetooth and it never selects the first song. It's whatever I was listening to before.
Sound system isn't as terrible as this makes it sound, but I can see how coming from a Pioneer head unit to the stock Entune head unit would be a drawback.
I don't have a huge issue with mine despite being a 2015. I think you'll be fine with it, or upgrade it like many others here have done and documented very well!

the maps update via cell towers?? Not sure that's accurate.
that aside it gets the job done..I've gone back and forth about swapping it out, but would rather spend the $$ on other things..

I would say more than anything the interface is clunky. It does nothing bad but its not really great at anything.

My 2019 Entune radio seems pretty darn good. But this is comparing to an old entune I had in my 2010 Tundra.
If I had to complain, its the sound. Wished the highs were crisper. I had to crank my treble up and put down the mids/bass.

I bought a set of Subaru Crosstrek Kicker tweeters and that dramatically changed the sound! The Crosstrek / Impreza tweeters are direct pull and play into our 4Runner.

How does it respond to bluetooth calls? Is there a delay? In my previous car it'd take forever for the call to actually connect.
Someone calls, I accept the call (either on phone or on head unit), the system would say "connecting blah blah phone call through bluetooth" and 5 seconds later i'd have someone on the other line saying "hello hello hello"
Also if i'm connected to bluetooth audio on my phone and play a youtube video there is a 1-2 second delay. Does that happen with the OEM 4runner headunits?

It picks up calls quickly. I've never had any issues with the bluetooth. I'm using an Moto z force droid.

I came from Android Auto and thought I’d hate Entune but I really do not.
I use Android and Spotify for music. Works well, not a single glitch in 3 months of ownership. Calls sound good on my end and the other. BT is as responsive as other vehicles I have used.
My GF has a 2016 RAV4 and when I talk to her when she’s driving it sounds like she’s at the bottom of a well. 4Runner sounds good.

I really enjoy mine.
Great sound for a stock, non premium sound system
My bluetooth works great and plays my music great.
If I turn off the car and come back in, it'll play where it left off.
Phone calls are crystal clear and never had a complaint from someone on the other end not being able to hear me.
As far as map updates, there is a micro USB slot in the head unit. That memory card is preloaded with maps. I'd assume in the future you'd have to buy a new memory card from Toyota with updated maps.

I have issues with my Entune. It is a 2016 Trail I bought 9 months ago. If I plug it in via USB about every 30 minutes or so it will shut off and restart on it's own. Running bluetooth at startup the music will sometimes sound like a bad skipped record (sound, no sound, sound no sound). I have to disconnect the phone from the system then pair it again. Really frustrating when it happens while I'm moving because you can't disconnect the BT until you stop. I have an Iphone 7.. Maybe it needs a software update on the Entune?

I've had mine for just a few days.
It's not terrible, but it's certainly not great, it's barely good, especially compared to other modern cars. Comparing it to my 6th Gen Camaro SS, it feels like stepping back a decade. The interface is... clunky and I feel like it tries to do too much on such a small screen. It reminds me a lot of the system that was in my grandmother's 2004 Buick Rendezvous.
The sound itself isn't terrible, but it feels like it needs about 25% more power, especially given that the 4Runner isn't exactly a quiet cabin.
The plus side seems to be that it's much easier to rip and replace it with a modern aftermarket headunit vs the nightmare of trying that in a lot of new cars.
