5th Gen Engine Oil Leak at 50k

Before I start the oil filter canister and drain plug are not the source of the leak.

Have some dye and a uv light coming...was wondering if anyone has experienced an oil leak of any sort and would mention where it was coming from so I'd have some great places to start checking first.

My valve cover was leaking on my 3rd gen a while back, but that was after 16 years and 250k miles. But maybe something is wrong with your gasket.

I have a leak at 26K. Mine looks like it is the gasket between the oil filter housing and the block. I'll be changing this out this weekend. Clean the oil off with carb cleaner or something and go drive around for a while and keep checking for new oil.

Thanks guys! Should I be using the specific engine degreased to clean up areas or is brake cleaner ok to use to spray on things?

The timing cover inspection plate, is a known source of an oil leak, passenger side, front of engine.

Do you have any pictures of that oil leak? That would help to narrow it down.

Rms

I had a rear main seal leak @ 42K. Mine is probably the 4th or 5th one I’ve heard about in a 5th gen

There's a thread about a rear mail seal leak being a quasi common occurrence on 5th gens. Hopefully covered under warranty for you.

Hello everyone thank you for the input.

Really hard for me to take a picture of where its coming from but looks like either at the front crank or front passenger side where the hoses go from the oil pain to the block. The belt and pulleys are covered in oil.

Luckily this type of engine oil leak should be under the powertrain warranty as I am below 60k/5years.

Yeah I was freaked out as I remember only like 3-4 quarts of oil left when I changed it.

Going to have dealer look at it Monday and I will update you guys with what I find.

....
Sounds like it is timing cover leak... as you said, it should be covered under power train warranty... still sucks that it happens with 5th gen 4.0,- I believe most of the time I have seeing it on first year (s) of this gen... what year is your 4Runner?

A search for threads dealing with oil leaks will net some with pics; as mentioned there is a history of 5th gen leaks. Also, if you use brake clean, do not get it on any painted surface. It will remove the paint fast!
