Anyone Allergic to their 4Runner?

I know that sounds silly, but I think I am.

Tuesday I broke out with a rash all over my body. In my 40 years I have never had a rash like this before and I'm not allergic to anything that I know of so I went to the doctor Thursday. We went over my diet for the past week and nothing abnormal, went over all the lotions and soap I use and nothing has changed recently, then he asked if I had gotten a new car. I told him I bought a new vehicle over the weekend and he said some interior materials used in cars can cause an allergic reaction. My heart effing sank as this could be a costly. He went on to say he still believes it is something I ate but we will monitor it. I agreed because honestly who is allergic to their car?

Not even thinking about it I went to run an errand earlier and when I got home I noticed the rash and bumps were larger and the itching was insane. As I was applying my cream it hit me what the doctor said about that car. I hope this is all a fluke, but damn it would suck to have to sell this car because I'm allergic to it.

Sounds like maybe allergic to the seats? Maybe you could have it swapped, leather, other cloth or can go for a seat cover? Hope the best!

I would try spraying the entire seating area with those sprays that help with allergies.

I can't remember the brand, but there are a few sprays out there meant to help with allergies that you can spray safely on cloth.

Something like this.

Get a detailer to shampoo your seats, then spray this stuff. That's what I would do.

Well fingers crossed it's something you ate. FYI I do believe there is a period where you can return your vehicle (at least with a new purchase). Maybe you could exchange for leather or something.

I didn't know BCM was on here. I wouldn't get mad if a RECCE-14 MCMR just fell out of the sky you know...

It's currently SofTex seating maybe leather would help? Getting it wrapped in leather would be much cheaper than trading it in I would assume. Still not 100% sure it's the car though.

You might be reacting to some of the detail chemicals used to prep new vehicles. Ask the dealer to see what they use.

It’s possible to get dermatitis from skin contact with chemicals or materials. Usually you are given oral or injected corticosteroids to stop the allergic reaction then told to avoid the offending substance. Did the doctor do that for you?

I presume you don’t drive naked, so getting it all over kind of precludes contact dermatitis from the seats or plastic parts. But maybe the general outgassing of the new plastics and adhesives in the enclosed interior could be a large chemical load for you and cause an all body reaction. Allergies can be acquired, or go away, as we age. Also, physical or emotional stress can bring on reactions. These allergy problems can be hard to diagnose.

One way to try to get to the root cause is get an allergy test done, where various chemicals are placed in a grid on your back then examined over several days to see if any cause a reaction. If you do this ask them to prepare a solution of the softex seat material. Probably swabbing some hidden area with isopropyl alcohol to get the test dose.

If you suspect it’s the chemicals outgassing in “that new car smell” try leaving the 4R in the sun and cracking the windows. Or blow a fan inside. Anything to hasten the evaporating. It should diminish in time.

Thanks Electro! Yeah don’t drive naked so really curious what it is to be all over and the fact this has never happened to me. I no longer believe it’s the SofTex as i just realized my Camry has it. My dumb ass thought it was real leather since the salesman told me it was. Doctor did give me some steroids to take over the next week but the rash is getting worse. Could be the fumes of the new car think I’ll drive the Camry until it goes away.

Hi,

Try turning all vents to OFF and keeping the fan off. If it gets too hot, open the windows for air. My 2017 still blows out these little blue pieces of plastic when I turn on the air/fan. Almost seems like some sort insulation. Good luck.

That's a big one. When I bought a new one in this year I damn near suffocated/fainted from the chemicals.

Just take a sip of benadryl every day and keep an epipen nearby.

Honest, a 4Runner is worth more than a silly rash. Tough it out.
