Information: Central / Southwest Colorado Passes
Hey y'all,
Just returned home from a trip to Lake City / Crested Butte area for some night sky photography…have some info that might be of interest to peeps wanting to go wheeling in these areas:
1) Per a local in Lake City (with confirmation from FEMA person standing next to him):
a) Engineer Pass will not open for Summer 2019 season.
b) Cinnamon Pass is iffy, as well. If it does open, it won't be until sometime in July.
c) Road from Silverton to Animas (CR2) will not be open to Animas for Summer 2019 season. 100+ feet of snow in areas will be too much to clear for this summer.
Lake City area had a very rough winter with numerous avalanches. The Sheriff's house was hit by an avalanche (CR-30 west of Lake San Cristobal) at 4:30am while he and his two daughters were sleeping. He dug himself out then dug out his two daughters; they're okay…figuring out the rebuild plan.
2) Per locals in Crested Butte:
a) Schofield Pass will not be open for Summer 2019 season. The road north of Gothic still has 60+ feet of snow.
b) Washington Gulch is closed just past Meridian Lake subdivision. They're currently evaluating whether Washington Gulch Road will be able to open in time for the Wildflower Festival in early July.
c) Slate River Road is closed just beyond Nicholson Lake. Like Washington Gulch, it too is being evaluated for whether it can be opened in time for the Wildflower Festival.
So, IF anyone is wanting to go wheeling in these areas, know that many of the typical wheeling areas may not be open. Best advise is to check with local authorities or Forest Service to know current status.
I'll be back in Crested Butte in a couple of weeks and will update with any information I can gather.
