Battery and Winch Amp Draw

About to replace my 5 year old factory Panasonic battery in anticipation of installing a Smittybilt X20 10000lb winch. If I'm reading the spec sheet on Smittybilt's website correctly, it shows the 10000lb winch draws 380 Amps. Smittybilt also recommends at least a 650 CCA battery to run the winch.

I'm pretty set on the X2 Power battery sold at Batteries Plus in the 24F size. It's rated at 840 CCA so I think it should be enough to support the winch. However, after tons of research, I'm getting mixed information stating the 24F size is enough, then feedback from others advise to get a bigger 31 size battery. Which one is true? The 24F appeals to me because it will fit without any modifications.

The 24, 34, and 65 will all fit in the stock spot, just watch the post location or you might need extensions to get the cables to fit up correctly.

The 31 is BIG. Stock battery weighs around 45 lbs, the 31 around 75 lbs and is several inches longer.

If you are winching through King of Hammers, go big, dual batts, and alternator. If you're just winching occasionally, the 24 is fine as long as you're not pulling 150 feet of cable in one go for the whole length. Keep the engine slightly revved to keep the voltage up and alternator spinning, should be good. Or, get a better alternator and no worries at all.

I have that X2 battery, replaced a Sears diehard Platinum and has been much better with the fridge running constant. FWIW.

380 amp max draw is very temporary. Most times you will be well below that.

I know I was winching a guy out of some salt flats down here, and had to do like 4 or 5 full length pulls to get him out. Stock battery held up just fine until about the halfway mark on the 4th pull. Gave her a 10 minute break and was able to finish out.

....and that was pulling on a Chevy Suburban that was sunk to the axles, and the tires just wouldn't bring it back up top.

I purchased a X2 Power last year from Batteries+ in the stock 24 size, I suggest upgrading your alternator fuse or go with a booster diode as well to increase the voltage to maintain close to a 14v charge in order to extend the life of that AGM battery. It's recommended to run 30 seconds pulls at a time on the winch pause then go again also rev up a tad through out the recovery process. I also carry one of those new mini portable jump starters, I was able to locate one on Vipon.com; 50% amazon coupon code request deal page.

Just bought a 31m yesterday for a couple reasons:
1. About to install a Warn Zeon 10s
2. I run Blackvue cameras that stay on all night with auto shutoff at 12v.
3. Installing a new lightbar.
4. Upgrading my stereo and adding an amp/subwoofer.
5. I like the additional terminals on the marine battery.

My battery tray will be here tomorrow, someone in the Northstar GB already installed the 31 tray and it fit.

I need to research this booster diode you mention above. Does this stress the alternator?

Chilow, I hope my response on the battery group buy page didn't cause confusion. The 24F would do the job just in shorter timed pulls. Here's an article that helped me do a power assessment for mine:Design Guide for 12V Systems

Just keep in mind that the alternator on the 4Runner runs at max 130A (Cant remember what RPM thats achieved at) and to subtract that from your power draw then you can calculate the run time before discharging the battery more than 25-30% and let it recharge via the alternator.

It will not, here is an active 3 year thread on this topic
"Voltage Booster" for 31M AGM Battery

I tried out the GM diode temporary then went serious after my audio upgrade and finally purchased his newer dual booster last year.

None whatsoever and maintenance free just make sure you understand your options out there. It isn't terribly expensive but it does what it says it does. I ended up giving my friend my GM diode and his rig uses a 24 X2 power battery with a Warn Zion winch, oem plus audio upgrade, and two sets of lights; he is perfectly fine with that setup as well.

I have the X20.

I have dual Group 31's. I actually have one for sale that is perfect condition (Odyssey PC2150ST $150).

The 4Runner has the space for a Group 31 so its an easy upgrade, I think with a winch, its a smart choice if you need to upgrade your battery anyways. Yes, a Group 31 is about 80lbs +/-.
